Distinctively KeLaTte : The Fish Scale Roof

A deserted, really old pile of atap bata..
.. broken here and there..
.. but some are still in good shape..
Another pile of atap bata inside Langgar Cemetery ground..
.. Future use? Just outside WW2 Memorial in Kota Bharu..
..the grey object goes with atap bata as roofing material..
This is how they put them up on the roof...
To hold the tiles at their designated position, lots of ...
..."jerghia" or a long piece of wood are needed..
..and this is how they arrange them, on top of each other...
..a fish-scale design which helps to drain down rainwater..
It seems that someone is still selling (?) spare atap bata !
Buildings with atap bata : The old Istana Balai Besar ..
.. and Istana Jahar in Kota Bharu..
..the restored Masjid Kampung Laut in Nilam Puri ...
A new structure with old design, the Kampung Kraftangan..
.. front view, Kampung Kraftangan, Kota Bharu ...
.. the Menteri Besar old residence ..
.. 100 yrs old shophouses ( still in use ) ..
.. an old family house ..
.. a Thai influenced rest pavillion.
.

BIARLAH ATAP ITU BERBICARA

Ada sesuatu yang kalian perlu tahu.
Tentang Kelantan.

Silalah, jangan segan silu. Buatlah macam fotopej sendiri.

Ahh, satu lagi.
Aku mahu kalian diam.
Hanya mata dan tetikus kalian sahaja yang dibenarkan mundar mandir.
Tengoklah gambar gambar dalam entri kali ini, satu persatu.
kerana
kepada kamu
atap itu mahu berbicara .... :

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Last Singhorra Factory
    There is something about the Malay houses in Kelantan and Terengganu
    that differ from that of the rest in the country. Look up and you'll see why: the singhorra tile.
    Instead of attap roofs, these East Coast houses have delicate,
    3mm-thin clay tiles that look like fish scales from a distance.
    These brick-orange roof tiles aren't just beautiful but serve a very functional purpose
    in Malaysia's extreme tropical climate.....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Singhorra on the roof

    The earthen oven for making the singhorra roof tiles used in east coast Malay houses
    sits just about 10m away from Jusoh Hussin's house in rustic Kampung Pengkalan Baru, Bachok, Kelantan.

    In the shed beside the oven, Siti Fatimah Awan, 50, one of 10 workers at Jusoh's backyard, spreads padi husk ashes on a roof tile mould and puts a slab of clay on it before she pushes the clay downwards with her right foot several times.
    She uses a wire cutter to slice away the excess and removes a 3mm-thick rhomboid-shaped grey clay......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* These old atap bata or clay roof tiles came from my grandparent's wooden house.
The house was dismantled years ago to have my uncle's new house built on the spot.
During the dismantling work, the still good atap bata were taken down carefully, placed at a corner, perhaps for some future use but somehow were forgotten which explains the thick vegetations and the current conditions. I picked some of the good ones and brought them home.
My grandparents' house is no more but I shall keep the remaining roof tiles as a simple token of appreciation, for those childhood memories which I dear most.
* A closer look on how atap bata are arranged and held at their places.
If you were to travel across Kelantan and Terengganu and see buildings or houses with this kind of roof tiles, note that they are all got fixed using this method.
* A house belonged to a Kelantanese Nobleman somewhere in Kota Bharu, as taken around 1905.
An example of practical and actual usage of Atap Bata in the days when roof tile was used to emphasize one's special status in the society.
( source : " Kelantan : A State of The Malay Peninsula " ( 1908 ) by W.A Graham, the then Siamese appointed British Advisor to the Court of Kelantan.)
* Some examples of existing (some are old) structures with Atap Bata.
As a note, the clay roof tiles, when newly placed, were brick-red in colour.
But as time passed in this hot and humid land, the exposed area would normally be covered by algae and dirt which somehow turned the tiles into an almost black, deep green coloration, which then blends with the wood to appear rustic and antique ( which is nice ! )
A Peep Into Atap Bata Past:
Quote:
    " ...Thatch, the use of which was universal a short while ago, is giving place to tiles, and a great deal of unsightly but useful corrugated iron is used in the construction of houses .... "
    W.A Graham ( 1908 ) " Kelantan : A State of The Malay Peninsula " Chapter VI : Towns and Villages, Page 28
    Note : Tiles = Atap Bata Singhorra / Singhorra Roof Tiles
Atap Bata in Real Life :
===========================================
    Inginkah kalian aku khabarkan
    bahawa aku bermimpi
    akan pada suatu masa
    bangsaku terngadah
    dari lena modernisasi
    lantas cuba menggapai kembali
    khazanah nenek moyang
    yang sudah hilang
    dilarikan angin alpa
    nun
    entah ke mana ~
===========================================
Atap singhorra ni mmg unik...some people may think it's not nice but even with the lumut and weathered look, they look even nicer to me...better than the blue tiles found in KL haha!
BTW, dah pergi ke Kandis Resource Centre?
Dulu kami pernah duduk beratapkan atap bata rumah itu masih lagi kekal sampai kini, tetapi memori silam sukar untuk dilupakan walaupun beberapa kali rumah kami 'tiris' dek air hujan bila angin monson timur laut melanda tapi kami bersyukur kerana dapat tidur dan ada tempat perlindungan.
Minamona :
He he in fact, saya baru perasan yg atap jenis nih memang unik kat Pantai Timur jer ( except Pahang ) Selama nih took it for granted jer.... So that's why I came up with this entry.
Kandis Resource Centre ? I know Kandis but have no idea where is the so called Kandis Resource Center. A visitor to this site, perhaps a Sudara Beach Resort staff by the name Fullmoon, told me about the place in his/her comments. Dengar cerita, kalau nak pi situ, kena buat appointment ? Ishh.. tak best laa gini.. he he.. ( kena bayar dak ? )
Ayusafura:
Mungkin budak tadika yang baru nak blaja silat, boleh praktis ngan atap nih ( this one is called atap bata actually , not atap genting.. he he )
Zaidi :
Rumah Tok ambo dulu atak bato jugok. Tapi takdok siling. Ingat lagi maso kechik2 dulu, sokmo maing kapaterbae kertas, pekong tinggi2 sapaa atah ghabung, pahtuh bilo lekat celloh jerghia atap tuh, pakkak sorghok ghamma2... fuuhh.. nostalgic nyor...
Joe pg :
I just linked them up like that using the simple command in the fotopage. Just test it yourself ! No photo editing software involved ( except, of course, the embedded words lahh )
Sorry, tak dpt nak give directions to KSR lah...but yes, it's best to call them ahead. Kak Rosna (widow to Nik Rashiddin) takes care of the place now, and she is just a treasure trove of knowledge herself. Tapi tempat tu "work in progress"...belum siap lagi. You mesti suka pergi situ...ari tu i kat sana, we all minum teh kat bawah rumah...best gila! heheh...doesn't take much to please me...
satu lagi i suka sgt makan kat ktan tu is the etak...betul ke spelling nih? tak tau lah high cholesterol ke or apa nutritional value die, tapi mmg sedap...i cadang you buat documentation pasal ni pulak...heheh, ada request line pulak!
anyway, keep up the good job!
Yer kak, atap bata.. he he
Saiful:
Ambik alamat and contact no. nih, reputed to be the LAST Singhorra Tiles maker in Kelantan, or else you have to go across Sungai Golok to get them :
Lot 247,Kampung Pengkalan Baru,
Batu 50, Bachok, Kelantan
Tel: 609-7788 104
Kalu tak silap, 45 sen sekeping. Mahal tapi very very fragile..
iztoy :
Musykil.. musykil... rumah Atuk kamu kat mana ?? Btw, kawan family Cik Iztoy ambik atap tuh dari Kelate eh ? Isskk.. kena mintak royalti nih.. registered trademark.. he he.. In fact, ambo sendiri pun ada gak berkira kira nak buat wakaf tradisional guna atap tu kat laman rumah. Tp apakan daya, bajet sakiit.. he he
rumah datuk saya kat Wakaf Baru. Rumah2 kat situ masih pakai lagi atap ni, tapi ada yg dah tukar dah, ganti ke asbestos (camni ke eja?). Kawan family tu mmg orang Kelantan pun, haha.. so takyah la bayar royalti pun kan? Dia architect, ada rumah kat PCB, very traditional. Pintu rumah yg zaman lama tu pun dia ada (rasanya pintu macam tu ada 4-5 biji ke je kot lagi kat Malaysia ni ). Nanti bila dah takde apa buat ngan duit, buat lah wakaf tu ek guna atap ni? Salam Ray. Rumah moyang saya di Kijal, Terengganu guna atap bata ni. Kadang-kadang putik nyior menimpanya dan atap itu pecah sedikit di beberapa tempat. Bila tengahari, sebilah cahaya matahari menusuk masuk. Dan bila ruangan dipenuhi asap dapur kayu, makin ketaralah bilahan-bilahan cahaya matahari seolah-olah menari didalam asap tersebut. Di beberapa resort di Langkawi, atap bata ini vesi lebih tebal digunakan. Terima kasih atas usaha saudara merakamkan ini semua. Mon 22-Jun-2009 10:49
