SIRI MAKLUMAN : Taking Shape
|
|
Nota Penulis :
Sekadar secebis makluman
kepada mereka yang jasadnya di kejauhan
tetapi hatinya tertinggal di Kota Bharu.
Shot : August 2005
Shot : January 2007
Photos Caption :
The Pelangi Condo & Mall project taking shape after nearly 2 years of construction ( not counting the one year delay ). A bit slow in pace compared to the later built KB Mall. The upper structure being the Condo while the lower parts for shop lots and a shopping mall, with sides overlooking the Kelantan River and the ever expending Kota Bharu town.
What you are looking at is not just a building under construction but also a river side waterfront in the making, said to be similar to that of Kuching, stretching from Lembah Sireh, to the Tambatan D'Raja. In other words, the town will get a newer and majestic look soon.
One of those people involved in the river side development projects is this guy I know from Cybernistan ( that is the Internet from my own book of terms). So, if you have any further question on the project, just rain him with lots of them .. he he .. and dont ask me, I know nothing !
As for the river side area, until a decade ago, it was the liveliest shopping district in Kota Bharu ( in fact, most of the town's oldest establisments could be found by or very close to the river ). Fast food eateries, cinema, supermarkets, shophouses and a hotel used to thrive in the area and its surroundings. When Jalan Pintu Pong / Parit Dalam / Padang Garong got developed and transformed into a new, much better commercial district, the river side area was slowly deserted and businesses started to diminish or slowing down to "siput sedut speed". Panggung Lido, " Taman Serendah Sekebun Bunga " (?), Hankyu Jaya, Parkson Ria, The Store ceased to exist ..... and the latest being the Jalan Tok Hakim McDonald's.
By the look, once completed, the sleepy area would probably regain its past popularity.
Though KB Mall seems much better in overall design but by location, I think I would prefer the river side !
One thing for sure, there will be more shopping outlets coming up.
Btw, I heard and read somewhere that TESCO will be coming to town too. I wonder where will that be ? Emmm ... while it is always good to have more choices, I am always worried of the setbacks ...especially the effects to the local businesses.
Whatever the outcome, I am hoping the very best for Kota Bharu, with barakah..... and by the way, it is not like Kuala Lumpur, we are aiming to be.
To be unique is.
( and of course, sorry for the blurry pics. You see, I am in dire need of a REAL camera )
FOOT NOTE :
( as a reply to bokbong's comment )
Recent developments in Kota Bharu, most if not all, seem to focus more on the flood factor i.e adapting to the flood rather than escaping it ( if you watch the anime One Piece, it's somewhat like the Aqua Laguna of Water 7 .. he he ).
So, as you can see here,
the base of the building is raised to a level that even the worst recorded flood in history won't reach the commercial floor ( wallahu a'laam .. ). A nearby car and an old pre-war building, would help you with the comparisons.
Btw, I am currently working on an entry on Kota Bharu and the flood factor ( in relation to the recent events in Johor etc ). Will be up soon ....

THE OLD POST OFFICE ROAD
|
|
Jalan Post Office Lama.
Sebatang jalan yang memang dikenali rata rata warga Kota Bharu.
Jalan " Post Office " Lama
" Post Office " dan tidak " Pejabat Pos " ..... he he
tetapi PERIHAL JALAN INI sendiri !
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ # ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Apabila sesuatu tempat dinamakan bersempena sesuatu struktur
baik semulajadi mahupun buatan dan tidak dengan nama atau gelaran manusia, perkara pertama yang dapat dideduksi adalah kewujudan struktur yang dinyatakan di tempat berkenaan.
Malangnya,
dalam sesetengah ( atau boleh jadi kebanyakan ? ) kes , ia tidak begitu
dan Jalan Post Office Lama ini kebetulan pula amat sesuai dijadikan contoh.
Jelas sekali tiada sekelumit pun dari apa yang dinamakan " Post Office " yang dapat dilihat di situ dan maksud " lama " itu sendiri nampaknya mencadangkan sesuatu yang boleh jadi sudah " lama " tiada !
Aku sendiri pernah terfikir akan perkara ini
hanya untuk dikecewakan dengan jawapan yang kurang pasti
dari mereka yang sendiri tidak pernah melihat kewujudannnya
( melainkan hanya melalui khabaran telinga dari khabaran telinga yang lain )
dan hampir hampir sahaja mempersetankan perihal ini sebagai sesuatu yang tak wajib dipersoalkan ....
sehinggalah aku terserempak
dengan rakaman berusia 100 tahun ini
yang sekaligus membuatkan minda aku terdetak :
" Ohh.. patut laaa ... Ghasso nyor hok nih doh bekalih .. Takdok doh hok laing ! "
Meet the old Kota Bharu Post Office !
Circa 1900s, as taken from the book " Kelantan : A State Of The Malay Peninsula " ( W.A. Graham, 1908 ).
Exact location ? Not stated.
But judging by the fact that in the past, buildings of importance were often built near main rivers ( in times when river transportation is more common than land ) and the proximity of Jalan Post Office Lama to the Kelantan River, I think it is unmistakably the one which gave Jalan Post Office Lama ( The Old Post Office Road ), its name.
By the way, notice the field, that was probably Padang Bank during its heyday !
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ # ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sekiranya telahan di atas adalah benar,
maka setinggi penghargaan ditujukan buat pihak berkuasa tempatan kerana masih terus mengekalkan nama " Jalan Post Office Lama " ( agaknya apa kata DBP atau Rais Yatim ? ).
Nota Selingan :
He he ... bila mana papan nama jalan berbicara !
JALAN - JALAN CARI JALAN - JALAN

Sultan, Temenggong, Tok Hakim, Dato' Pati ( Dato' Mufti ), Doktor, Dato' Lundang ( gappo dio ?
) turut mudah ditemukan.

Jalan Long Yunus bersempena nama pengasas Kesultanan Kelantan moden ( abad ke-17 ) dan Jalan Hamzah dari nama bekas Menteri Besar (?) Kelantan iaitu bapa Tengku Razaleigh Tengku Hamzah ( Ku Li - tokoh S46 / UMNO ).
Jalan Che Su, Jalan Che Kadir ... ( he he .. hanya orang Kelantan akan faham ... )

Jalan Sehala
Sekian. Terima Kasih.

Tambatan D'Raja after the monsoon ( updated : 4 Feb 2007 )
|
|
|
Flags dancing in the 60 ~ 70 kph wind with heavy rainclouds looking from up above.
( Image was taken on 9th Jan 2007 )
Waves beaten Pantai Cahaya Bulan ( PCB ).
There was a stretch of sandy shoreline just beyond these rocks. It was recovering from years of coastal erosion when the year’s seasonal rough sea caught up to it again. The waves constant and continuous scraping of the shallow seabed resulted into water of such quality and the area proximity to the mouth of Kelantan River adds to its muddy / murky appearence ( due to sediments, silt etc ).
( Image was taken on 9th Jan 2007 )
I guess the five straight days ordeal ( since Saturday ) had finally ended.
At the time I got this entry posted,
the stormy weather had ceased and everything had calmed down to exactly like before.
No more wind, no more rain, just clouds filled sky with ocassional blue skies.
Much of the main rivers throughout Kelantan too, had receded to normal level and other than a very few affected areas, it seems that Kota Bharu and much of the state are again, spared !
I dont know what or how to say of this.
I wonder whether this is supposed to be a good thing or the other way around.
Mixed emotions to be exact, since to many Kelantanese, in spite of the fact that hardships often follows, flood is regarded as a normal, natural annual occurrence that is much awaited for and not to have one for the year is beyond amazement.
Well, I missed the chilly wind though.
Judging from past experiences, since it is already mid January,
normally that would mark the end of the season though in very recent past there was one rare exception.
Whatever shall be after this, God knows best and He alone is the best Provider,
thus I hope that every gush of wind and every single drop of water that follows, be blessed, copious and beneficial !
Wallahu a'laam ....
Ameen.
SOMETHING WORTH KNOWING
| Quote: |
A COPIOUS, BENEFICIAL RAIN
The state of the Prophet (peace be upon him) would change when he saw the storm clouds approached. ``Â’ishah relates: “When he saw the storm clouds build up on the horizon, he would leave off what he was doing, even if he had been in prayer, and say: “O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the evil that it contains.” If Allah took it away, he would praise Allah, and if it rained, he would say: “O Allah! (Make it) a copious, beneficial rain.” [Musnad Ahmad (6/190), al-Adab al-Mufrid (686), Sunan Abî Dâwûd (5099), Sunan Ibn Mâjah (3889), and Sunan al-Nasâ’î al-Kubrâ (1829)]
-------------------------- & --------------------------
Â’ishah relates that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) noticed the wind pick up or saw a cloud, a change could be seen to come over his face. So she said: “O Messenger of Allah, when the people see the clouds, they feel happy, hoping that they bring rain. Yet, I notice that when you see them, an expression of dislike can be seen on your face.”
He said: “O Â’ishah. I am not secure that it does not come with punishment. A people were punished by wind. When the people saw the punishment coming, they said: ‘This cloud will give us rain!’ [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (4829)]
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was making reference to the following verses of the Qur’ân: “So when they saw it as a cloud appearing in the sky advancing towards their valleys, they said: ‘This cloud will give us rain!’ Nay! it is what you sought to hasten on, a blast of wind in which is a painful punishment, destroying all things by the command of its Lord. And morning found them so that naught could be seen save their dwellings. Thus do We reward the guilty folk.” [Sûrah al-Ahqâf: 24-25]
Quoted From : IslamToday : “A copious, beneficial rain”
-------------------------- & --------------------------
Surah Al Ahqaaf, verse 24 :
" When they saw punishment as a cloud heading for their valleys, they said: “Here is a cloud that will bring us rain!” (When he heard that Prophet Hud said): “By no means, but it is that (punishment) which you have sought to hasten: a wind bringing a woeful scourge. "
Surah Al Ahqaaf, verse 25 :
“Every thing will it destroy at the bidding of its Lord!” (After the calamity befell them) they were (completely destroyed) so that nothing could be seen except the ruins of their dwellings! Thus we recompense people lost in sin.

UPDATED 13 JAN 2007 :
The southern Malaysian state, Johor was again struck by flood, for the second time in the same season, as reported by the local newspapers today.
Conditions are reported to worsen. Heavy rainfall that was forecasted over the East Coast and Northern states earlier, fell unexpectedly on the southern region instead, causing the second wave of major floodings.
To be hit badly by the second time in one season is probably a very very rare occurance, and might be the worst thing when you are ill-prepared. Even the most flood-prone Kelantan, as far as I am aware, never got hit on major scale, twice in the same time.
My deepest sympathy and condolences to the affected Johoreans and others as well.

On Flesh & Blood ~
|
|
Sunday.
10 Zulhijjah 1427 H,
the the last day of December 2006.
The monsoon lost its spell today.
The morning Sun shined brilliantly and the sky was remarkably blue.
The morning air too, was 23 C on my dual-sensor electronic thermometer ( brought all the way from Japan ), amazingly cool for a normal 25 ~ 26 C Kota Bharu tropical morning.
A very fine day I would say.
Allahu akbar,
Allahu akbar,
Allahu akbar ..... wa Lillahil hamdu
May your Hajj and Sacrifices are well accepted by the God Almighty.
A very fine day indeed.
EID MUBARAK !
SELAMAT HARI RAYA EID UL ADHA !
A typical scene during Aidil Adha ( or Eid ul Adha ) in Kelantan, a family slicing up of what is left from a sacrified cow.
A part had already gone to charity ( which is compulsory ) and seen here are the leftovers, the part which is lawful to be consumed by the family and relatives.
Aidil Adha is probably much felt in Kelantan, compared to other parts of Malaysia.
Besides the large Muslim population and the countless number of mosque continuously reciting special takbir for three straight days, the abundance of livestock along with the presence of many experienced practitioners ( for the sacrificial rite ) had contributed much to the festive mood in Kelantan. Even the bustling streets of Kota Bharu sleep well on Aidil Adha !
Even though I am not a fan of red meat, such occasional treat especially in the form of ajok makae ( ajak makan ) or even ngekkoh ( kenduri aqiqah ), spending time feasting with family and friends, is undeniably enjoyable !
SOME OTHER THING :
Well, well .... 2007 eh ?
Wow, it has been three years since I first started photoblogging.
Great God ! Three years of frying my eye balls with radiations from my PC screen !
What started as a very personal thing
turned out to be a total devotion to my birthplace.
Weird maybe, but that's the way things turned out here.
Day by day,
the more I found out about Kelantan and the more I write about it,
the more I fell in love with it, the more I got stuck with it.
Ha ha ha .. maybe I am just trying too hard.
Sooner or later I have to or shall do away with this for good. Only time will tell.
Besides, at this critical point of my life, there should be no more room for wishful thinkings.
But one thing for sure,
no matter what shall I decide or where shall I go,
or where shall I dwell or even what shall become of me after this
I assure you that every strip of my flesh
and every trickle of blood running deep in my vein
will forever be RED ....

SIRI MAKLUMAN : Perginya Sebuah McDonald
|
 |
|
McDonald pertama di Kelantan ...
|
|
 |
|
muncul di satu sudut bangunan ini pada 1993 ...
|
|
 |
|
dan setelah 13 tahun, ia berakhir begitu sahaja.
|
|
|
tertera Rumi berselang Jawi ( pelancong luar pun terlopong )
tiga belas tahun lalu
di Kota Bharu.
Bila mana ia mula berhenti berniaga,
sangka aku, cuma untuk renovasi sementara.
Bila mana segala simbol kewujudan dijolok turun
helaian demi helaian warkah di cermin
ternyata ia untuk selamanya.
Ha ha.
Bukan apa, sekadar melayan hembusan bayu sentimental
yang baru sahaja bertiup menembusi kotak memori aku
meniup debu debu ingatan silam dari fail 1993
dalam sebuah kelas sekolah rendah
rakan sebaya bersembang perihal sensasi
akan ketibaan sebuah rangkaian makanan segera terkini
di belakang pasaraya Bersatu.
" Hilleir sergho dapak makae McDonald. Sohhor alik KL nuh ... "
kata mereka.
He he .. maaf.
Sekadar melayan sekerat nostalgia.
Tidak, aku bukannya peminat makanan segera ( urrghhh ! you call that food ? ) apatah lagi penyokong simbol imperialis globalis Zionis Amerika ( you know who ).
Sekian, terima kasih.

When Everyone Gets Their Share ~
|
|
Ada Apa Dengan Disember ?
First,
it was Kelantan and Terengganu in December 2004 ( 8th ~ 12th Dec ).
Then,
it was Kedah and Perlis in December 2005 ( 17th Dec ~ ? ).
Now ( at the very moment ),
it is Johor, Pahang, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan !
While the latter two are the least common ( the most recent is said to be the rarest though, reported to be a centennial frequency ), we all should acknowledge that when it happens, it happens ...
No matter how " developed " your place is.
I guess, it's a small small World indeed !
( My deepest sympathy goes to all people affected by the current and past floods )
SOMETHING WORTH PONDERING :
The Holy Quran, Surah Ar-Ruum ( 30 ): 41:
ظَهَرَ الْفَسَادُ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ لِيُذِيقَهُم بَعْضَ الَّذِي عَمِلُوا لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ
" Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have done. (These happen) so Allah may make them taste a part of the result of their bad deeds and so that they may return (to the truth by repenting to Allah, and begging His Pardon) "
The Holy Quran, Surah Al-Anfaal ( 8 ): 25:
وَاتَّقُوا فِتْنَةً لَا تُصِيبَنَّ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مِنْكُمْ خَاصَّةً وَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ
“And guard yourselves against a temptation to evil (that will lead to calamity) which will afflict not only the wrongdoers among you alone (but which will fall on all of you in general). And know that Allah is most severe in punishment. ”
MALAYSIAN FLOOD TRIVIA :
No mala fide, just plain and honest trivia(s) :
* The flood in Kelantan and Terengganu is so common that it is deemed seasonal and a must-expect during every year end.
Locals learned to cope, co-exist and adapt with the annual event (some households even prepared boats under their stilt supported, elevated houses), and know exactly when and how to evacuate themselves and belongings ( cars ! ) to safety.
While the flood would still affect their livelihoods in a way or another, many regard it as an " Annual Water Fiesta " especially in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
* A prominent figure from a state up north along with his fellow counterparts,
during the Pengkalan Pasir ( Pasir Mas, Kelantan ) 2005 By-Election Campaign, is reported to say things like,
" Kelantan, due to bad governance, is lacking in good drainage and irrigation system thus the state would get flooded easily each rainy season " and " in Pasir Mas, a little rain is all enough to give you a fish pond under your house ".
Days after the reported statement, his whole state went under water ( while Kelantan was spared ).
* The Malaysian Meteorological Department warned the East Coast states ( Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu, mainly the latter two ) that heavy rain with high probability to create troubling floods is coming their way.
The prediction was right though, but it fell ( perhaps still falling ) on the "wrong" place - the Southern Malaysian state of Johor and neighbouring states, creating unexpected disastrous floods.
At the moment, Kelantan and Terengganu and most parts of Pahang is (still) spared.
* A friend's wedding reception in Kota Tinggi, Johor, which was scheduled on the 24th Dec, had to be canceled due to the unexpected flood and for that, I had to abort my Johor ( and Singapore ! ) trip and get my tickets refund.
Now that what I called a sad experience ( no, not the refund part but the reception call-off thing ! ).
Now who says that I am not affected by the flood ?

| Quote: |
Cuba baca!
http://kuihmanis.blogspot.com/2006/12/bahasa-jiwa-bangsa.html
|
Wah ! Hebat !
Syabas !
Bahkan jika dibelek Kamus Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka sekalipun,
" .... sprinkled with words of a local manufacture or of a Siamese origin,
unknown in other parts of Malaya ... "
" .... these dialectical peculiarities indue the Kelantan dialect with many subtleties
of expression not to be found elsewhere ... "
Seperti kata Melayu “Allah,” maka katanya “Aloh*”; maka kata Melayu “sangat,”
katanya “sanga`”; maka kata Melayu “bulan,” katanya “bulang”; “makan,” katanya “makang”; “minyak,” katanya “minyok”; “tuan,” katanya “tuang,” dan “enci´,” katanya “ci´”;
maka demikianlah sekaliannya berubah bunyinya; tetapi tulisannya bersamaan hurufnya dengan kita ......... "
Terlalu buruk ? Bunyi seperti orang Ceti berbahasa Melayu ?
" Very few Kelantan Malays have any acquaintance with Siamese, and though
some of the nobility have a smattering of that language, picked up during former
years of residence at Bangkok, H.H the Raja himself knows no word of it. "
Bahkan, betapa hebatnya penangan loghat Kelantan ini telah menyebabkan W.A. Graham sendiri dengan rela hati mengakui :
" .... The Siamese and most of the old-time Chinese use the Singora dialect
of Siamese, but all know Malay as a second language .... "
( Nota : " Malay " = loghat Kelantan, dulu tak ada sistem pendidikan Bahasa Melayu macam sekarang )
Kalaulah orang Kelantan sepertimana yang mereka fikirkan sekalipun,
bayangkanlah mengapa Kerajaan Thai yang sememangnya jelas ultra-nasionalis
( Prem Tinsulanonda, the President of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's Privy Council dilaporkan pernah berkata apabila dicadangkan penggunaan Bahasa Melayu di Selatan Thai : " We cannot accept that [proposal] as we are Thai. The country is Thai and the language is Thai... We have to be proud to be Thai and have the Thai language as the sole national language " )
| Quote: |
" .... Adopting the local dialect of Malay, which locals call Yawi, was one of the key proposals made by earlier this year by the National Reconciliation Commission appointed by Thaksin to look into peace-making measures .... "
|
| Quote: |
Yawi is the transcription of the Thai word ยาวี, which Thai people understand to be the Patani Malay language (or Bahasa Melayu Patani in Malay). The name of the language might more accurately be transcribed to Jawi as that is how it is rendered using the Arabic alphabet. However, as the Thai letter ย is normally transcribed as 'y', the romanized "Yawi" is not entirely in error.
Yawi is widely spoken in the southern Thailand provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani, and some areas in Songkhla. It is estimated that there are three million Yawi (Patani Malay) speakers.
Patani Malay is a dialect of Malay and utilizes Jawi in writing. Hence, it is unintelligible to most Thais. Malay and possibly Patani Malay once had influence as far north as Isthmus of Kra, Phuket (originated from the Malay word bukit or "hill") and Surat Thani during the times of Srivijaya. In fact, a large number place names in southern Thailand are of Malay origin.
The Patani Malay dialect is similar to that of Kelantanese Malay.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yawi
|
Sebab ?
" Orghae alik sano orghae kito jugok, kae'chaek pun suppo kito. Kae'chaek Kelatae.
Bunnying Siyyae sebak lammo keno ghaetoh kor Siyyae .... "
sekurang kurangnya W.A. Graham, tampak lebih dahulu faham mengapa afiliasi sedemikian wujud :
" .... Yet to the accustomed ear, this dialect is a musical one .... "
Demo tock paehae lagi kor ?
Kalu tok paehae, marghi ambo wi ppaehae ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ & ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Entah.
Saban hari saya saksikan bagaimana keadaan semasa di Kelantan dimanipulasikan sebegitu rupa oleh pelbagai media massa seolah olah menggambarkan bahawa tiada tempat yang paling teruk di Malaysia melainkan Kelantan.
Pastinya Kelantan memiliki pelbagai kelemahan, sebagaimana juga negeri negeri lain di Malaysia. Tetapi tidak perlulah dihurai sedemikian rupa seolah olah mahu menyampaikan mesej secara halus kepada umum bahawa rakyat Kelantan bermentaliti "mundur" dan layak dicemuh. Mungkin segelintir begitu tetapi pastinya bukan majoriti.
Kegagalan kita untuk menilai kecantikan di sebalik perbezaan menyebabkan kita hanya nampak kebagusan dari apa yang mainstream sahaja ( kononnya ). Perkara " mainstream " yang jelas saban hari makin mengelirukan identiti dan jati diri, yang langsung membutakan mata dari mengenali hakikat diri sendiri.
Yang aneh, tanpa terlebih dahulu cuba memahami, kita terus ghairah menghentam dan langsung tidak sedar bahawa apa yang kita cuba atau sedang hentam itu adalah saki baki cermin kepada susur galur kita sendiri .....
Kesian.
Dan kesian juga kepada aku kerana terpaksa menaip sebegini panjang.
Satu fenomena yang jarang berlaku.
Iklan kedai Rubber Stamp, " sudoh slaluh " yang membawa makna " siap segera ".
Di Kelantan, bercanggah dengan Bahasa Melayu Standard, perkataan " slaluh " atau " selalu " tidak memberi makna " sentiasa " sebaliknya bermakna " segera ".
Perlu diingatkan, perkataan " selalu " bagi maksud " sentiasa / kerap " tidak wujud dalam kamus dialek Kelantan dan untuk memberi maksud sedemikian, perkataan " sokmo " digunakan.
KIRI :
" Kini Dibuka, BZ Carwash, U Cuci Park Gu Kito Deh ! "
" Tolonglah Buwi Laluan, Ten Q "
Tertera di hadapan kedai basuh kereta berdekatan Kampung Sireh, Kota Bharu.
"Buwi" adalah sebutan tipikal Kelantan bagi " beri " dan " U Cuci Park Gu Kito Deh ! " bagi aku, membawa maksud yang " ambiguous " ... emm ... " Gu " biasanya bermaksud " rakan " atau " golongan ". Cuci kereta di tempat kami ? tempat golongan kita ? tempat orang kita ? tempat kawan kita ? Tertakhluk atas tafsiran peribadi. Yang penting, di situ tempat basuh kereta ...
" Banana Cake KEKPISE Ramuan : Pise, Gandum, Gula, Telor "
" Pisang " dieja " Pise ", mengikut sebutan tempatan ( " pi - sae " )
Ha ha lawak apakah ini ? Ekspresi loghat Kelantan jenis sebegini pun ada ?
Song reunites Thai bus woman with family
A Thai woman who was lost for 25 years after catching the wrong bus home was finally reunited with her family thanks to simple song.
The last time Jaeyaena Beuraheng saw her seven children was in 1982 when she left the southern Thailand province of Narathiwat on one of her regular shopping trips across the nearby border with Malaysia.
She disappeared, and police later told her family that she had apparently been killed in a traffic accident.
A RAF PBY Catalina was shot down by the Japanese as it monitored the Japanese
invasion fleet that was closing in on Malaya. It was around 10am on December 7th,
1941 local time (or, 10.30am according to our time now, or, 4.30pm on December
6th in Honolulu, Hawaii). Shortly after midnight of 7th/8th December local time, fierce
artillery salvos were let loose and the Japanese invasion of Malaya was underway.
At this time, it was just after 6am on December 7th in Hawaii, and Admiral Nagumo’s
planes were just on their way to Pearl Harbour. "
In remembrance to that moment in time,
I dedicated this entry
to the dying history of our land ...
Pillbox.
A small, low structure of reinforced concrete, enclosing machine guns, and employed as a minor fortress in warfare.
I found this pillbox on a lovely stretch of beach in Jajahan Bachok, Kelantan,
despite sinking into the sand, it still stands firm against the monsoon waves of the South China Sea.
Built by British troops just before World War II, pillboxes like this one used to dot the beaches and British military installations in Kelantan. Most of course, were built looking out to the sea as the British knew exactly how the Japanese would come.
It was reported that there are around 20 pillboxes, left in the state.
In coastal-erosion-ravaged Kelantan, with some had already gone into the sea and much had been deliberately demolished to give way to human activities, I doubt the figure is still reliable today.
This one on a beach called Pantai Kuala Belongan ( pantai = beach ) was in fact never used in the actual battle which took place some 15 km up north, in a small sandy estuary called Kuala Pak Amat ( Pantai Sabak ) in Jajahan Kota Bharu.
Now partly submerged in the fine sand and judging by its condition, I believe it was built quite further inland away from water edge, 66 years ago ....
I accidentally learned about the existence of this lone pillbox from Kamal's fotopage entry.
There is another one in nearby Melawi which I already knew exists and I thought to myself that this must be the last to be found intact in Bachok.
I was about to leave the spot and was admiring it for the last time when suddenly,
my eyes caught something peculiar a kilometer away.
A silhoutte of a very familiar shape and size.
Curious, I decided to walk the distance, southward, for a better look.
Surprised, the mysterious silhoutte was indeed, of another pillbox !
This stretch of beach, a kilometre or so from where I start ( Pantai Kuala Belongan ) is known as Pantai Kuala Nipah. A little bit further south should be the famous Pantai Melawi, I guess. ( I was facing north when I snapped this one ) ...
Amazed by the unexpected finding, I scanned the surrounding for other likeness, but none except for one, some 700 meters away southward. Looking up to the gloomy sky, I decided to return to my car and dismiss the sight as a boat shed. Besides, I was not expecting much either. But maybe I should come again sometime ( with a binocular, of course ).
~~~~~~~ & ~~~~~~~
Looking further back in time, to my childhood days,
I remember catching my first glimpse of this so called pillbox on a beach in Pengkalan Chepa, some 25 km from Kota Bharu town. The locals called it "Kubu Jepong" ( Japanese Fort ), a misnomer as I learned later that the British were the ones who built it, to face the then, approaching Japanese troops.
If you are a true Kelantanese of my age or older, you would probably know about that "Kubu Jepong" of Pantai Sabak. Today, large portion of the onced white sandy, beautiful beach had been eaten away by the sea, sadly along with the pillbox.
This is the last photo which I managed to snap of the ill-fated war relic :
This shot was taken on one of its last days in 1994 with a cheap Canon.
( you see, even back then, I was an avid photographer .. he he ).
No effort was taken to save this piece of history. Maybe to them, it is just a blob of useless concrete.
Now completely gone into the sea, even the very spot where I stood for the shot is probably 100 meters or so, off the remaining shoreline of today's Pantai Sabak.
Looking at this old photo reminds me of a written inscription on the pillbox wall.
In black paint, there was this sentence ( still visible in this pic. ) :
" KUBU YANG DIGUNA UNTUK MEMPERTAHANKAN SERANGAN JEPUN 1941 "
which simply translates,
" The fortification used to counter the Japanese Attack 1941 ".
I have no idea who put the words there but I still remember pointing my finger at the physical scars left on the pillbox surface. Ammunition inflicted scars, or probably just my exaggerated childhood imagination. Either way, the pillbox is no more there, to tell the truth.
A great personal lost indeed.
~~~~~~~ & ~~~~~~~
Honestly, I have no hope for the remaining pillboxes in Kelantan.
Not so long ago, a pillbox located next to the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Pengkalan Chepa, was demolished to give way to Taman Bendahara, a shophouses project .
It onced stood very close to the clock tower, built by Japanese WW2 veterans in 1988 and judging by the pillbox position, I am sure it was used by the retreating British troops as their last line of defence in the battle of Pantai Sabak ....
But the irony is this, onced Taman Bendahara was completed, the spot where the pillbox onced stood is left empty, void of any structure. I wonder why they should do that in the first place. Whatever the reason is, the historical pillbox had surely " died " in vain ......... for nothing.
Still, at the time being,
I could see nothing "promising" from the authority in favour of the pillboxes.
From my part, I decided to act alone, searching and cataloguing the remnants in text and photos for my personal collection. Doing so, I would know someday that they did exist and that the textbooks aren't bluffing .....
I have been locating those pillboxes for already quite some time since returning from Japan. To date, I had personally located and identified seven pillboxes altogether.
Besides those two newly identified pillboxes as shown above, there is another one on the bank of the Kelantan River in Kota Bharu, right between the Grand Riverview Hotel and the under construction, Pelangi Mall.
Then there is one right by the road side in Pengkalan Chepa and another one nearby, nestled in a coconut grove on a land belonging to Malaysian Airport Berhad. Within the Pengkalan Chepa Airport ground itself there is also a pillbox, located by the runway. I accidentally noticed it on one of my trip to Kuala Lumpur. The latter two are the ones that I know exist but inaccesible due to the private and restricted areas they are in.
Finally there is one at Pantai Melawi ( in Jajahan Bachok ), the one that I preferred most, neglected but naturally and beautifully preserved.
Now that I have found seven,
there should be at least 10 other left to be found ..... and from the latest info I got,
there should be one pillbox in Kampung Lalang Luas ( former British military airfield ) in Jajahan Machang and one, said to be in easy reach, somewhere very close to Jubakar Laut in Jajahan Tumpat. Their exact locations are sketchy though, so I guess, I will be out " treasure-hunting " again !
One thing for sure,
this one in the World War 2 Memorial in Kota Bharu,
is absolutely OFF my list !
A pillbox replica at the World War 2 Memorial ( the Bank Kerapu ) in Kota Bharu.
I wonder, what's the use of " keeping " a replica while the original ones are left to deteriorate out there ....
Thank you, I shall see this as one of the best real life irony .... * sigh ~ I wonder where we are heading to, really ?
To me, what amazed me about this so called " Bok House " is not the story behind it but how it made Front Page in a well known national newspaper.
I wonder, could similar historical structure in Kelantan, if were to have the same fate, be made Front Page too ?
If yes, let's start with the pillbox !
An old Kelantanese Ngukussae Tanoh
( a " Periuk Pengukus Tanah Liat " or Earthen Steamer Pot )
T H E ~ S T O R Y :
Something from the family " heirloom ".
Acquired from an old family house in Kampung Kota, torned down years ago. Owned by my late great grandmother from my mother's side.
In those days,
when metal cooking-ware were rare and luxurious to some, when traditional methods ruled over modern methods, people would cook their food with earthen and wooden utensils.
So, to cater to the needs, there used to be many household pottery-makers throughout Kelantan back then, like there used to be many Singhorra tile makers, supplying to the housing needs.
At present, both industries are virtually " non-existent ".
This one is a Ngukussae or in "proper" standard Malay, a " Pengukus ".
To use it, first, a piece of clean and nicely shaped banana leaves is placed on top of the holes, and food to be steamed, normally rice is placed inside the pot, on top of the leaves.
After the lid is placed, the pot is then put over a cauldron of boiling water to complete the job.
Having read this,
so do you have any idea how the well known Nasi Dagang was cooked back then ?
* Maybe I should get a more " mouth-watering " looking photo of Nasi Dagang Kelantan.
This take-away sure looks more like a leftover ( no, it's not a leftover, of course ) .. he he
( Satu kesinambungan dari entry " Kembali Ke Sekolah " ( 10 Apr 2006 ).
Sebagai mengenang ulang tahun ke - 10, aku meninggalkan zaman PMR.
Sebelum itu, aku ingin meminta maaf kepada para pelawat ke situs ini kerana lagi sekali, entry ini bersifat peribadi. )
" AKU DATANG, AKU SINGGAH, AKU PERGI DAN HAMPIR SAHAJA AKU TERUS BERLALU TANPA MENOLEH ... "
Kata orang,
Hari Raya adalah hari yang terbaik bagi mengukuhkan semula ikatan yang longgar,
menyambung semula yang telah putus dan menjejak semula yang terabai.
Bersama dengan seorang rakan, aku ke Jalan Telipot, sebatang jalan utama di bandar Kota Bharu, ke sebuah sekolah menengah bernama Maktab Sultan Ismail.
Tiada sesiapa pun di situ pada musim perayaan begini.
Itu aku tahu dan aku tak kisah kerana sasaran aku bukanlah manusia, tetapi sekolah itu sendiri.
Ya, dia sekolah lama aku.
Sekolah terkenal di Kelantan, menghimpunkan pelajar dari tingkatan 1 hingga ke Tingkatan 6. Sekolah khusus bagi pelajar lelaki sahaja ( kecuali Tingkatan 6 ).
Sekolah yang hampir hampir sahaja lenyap dalam kekalutan memori ini.
Bagi aku,
peringkat awal memasuki Maktab Sultan Ismail, yang juga dikenali secara manja sebagai Sultan Ismail College atau S.I.C, merupakan suatu pengalaman yang unik.
Kisah bermula setelah 6 tahun minda aku dibasuh, diproses, dipaketkan dengan rapi
dan dilabel halal UPSR di Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Sultan Ismail ( 1 ).
Walaupun sejurus setelah itu aku dipelawa ke sebuah sekolah berasrama penuh yang berprestij di Kuala Lumpur, atas sebab sebab yang sebenarnya boleh dielakkan, pelawaan itu aku serkup rapat rapat tanpa diberi peluang bernafas.
Seingat aku, aku terus alihkan tumpuan, yang tika itu masih keliru, kepada Maahad Muhammadi dan Maktab Sultan Ismail, kedua duanya terletak di Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
Tika itu, pengaruh rakan sebaya memang dasyat.
Sedasyat aura Ji Fat semasa bertarung dengan Maharaja Zhou dalam komik Alam Perwira.
Tanpa fikir panjang, aku abaikan panggilan dari Maahad Muhammadi semata mata untuk menyertai bekas rakan sepersekolahanku yang rata rata ingin menyerbu Maktab Sultan Ismail. Lagipun, apa yang " mainstream " itu terasa seperti lebih afdhal ...
Penantian aku berhasil, bila mana aku berjaya disahkan tempat di situ.
Sebenarnya,
pandangan awal aku terhadap alam persekolahan menengah tidaklah manis.
Stereotaip aku tika itu adalah, sekolah menengah adalah sekolah yang tiada masa berseronok sebagaimana sekolah rendah, serba susah serta sentiasa ditekan dan dikongkong secara fasis.
Maka, tidak segan aku akui yang tika itu, aku amat takut menghadapi hakikat berpindah ke sekolah golongan remaja. Lebih lebih lagi pengalaman aku di "trauma" kan semasa berada di " sekolah transit " ( lihat penjelasan di nota kaki ) seolah olah telah membuktikan sangkaan aku sebelum itu.
Kalian bayangkanlah,
tidak pernah dalam hidup aku melainkan di " sekolah transit " itu,
aku diajar bahawa selain lantai, meja juga boleh dijadikan alas berdiri atas kemahuan guru, dijerkah dengan falsetto ber " desibel " tinggi dari jarak jauh, minit perhimpunan mingguan yang menyeramkan serta penuh adegan suspen dan segala macam perkara yang bagi aku, suatu kejutan budaya yang jika dikenang kembali sekalipun, masih tetap tidak boleh diterima akal ini.
Mengambil iktibar,
aku fikir Maktab Sultan Ismail pastinya lebih brutal dan lebih traumatik.
Almaklumlah wujudnya sejak 1936 lagi. Jauh lebih awal dari " sekolah transit " itu.
Lagipun, jaraknya dengan " sekolah transit " itupun hanyalah sekangkang Ultraman Taro.
Tetapi sangkaan aku meleset sebaik sahaja aku memulakan pengajian di Maktab Sultan Ismail. Aku dapati mudah sahaja jiwa aku sebati di sekolah itu. Suasana persekitaran juga santai dan tidaklah setegang sebagaimana sebelum. Para pendidik tetap dengan pelbagai ragam namun pendekatan mereka ternyata lebih mudah aku hadhamkan.
Rakan rakan juga pelbagai ragam dan gaya tetapi mereka saling mewarnai suasana.
Perhimpunan mingguan pula sering diserikan dengan tepukan selingan yang sarkastik biarpun si pengetua masih belum habis berucap.
Yang pasti,
tahun demi tahun aku di situ,
dirasakan semakin bermakna dan serasi.
Semakin seronok.
Sedikit Catatan :
Foto kedua dari bawah adalah kelas pertamaku di Maktab Sultan Ismail, Tingkatan 1 Perdagangan 4 atau mudahnya " 1 P 4 ". Susunan meja dan kerusi agak kacau, mungkin para pelajar tak sabar sabar nak cuti beraya agaknya ?
Mengimbau kenangan silam, meja dan kerusi aku dahulu berada lebih kurang bersebelahan bingkai tingkap ke-5 ( dari sudut belakang ).
Jengah sahaja ikut tingkap, terus nampak Asrama Putera. Kalau kebetulan ke kelas pada sebelah petang ( bagi aktiviti ko-kurikulum dsb ), boleh nampak warga asrama terjerit jerit, mundar mandir dengan pelbagai ragam dan gaya.
Kenangan terindah ? Pernah muncul sebagai pelajar terbaik keseluruhan Tingkatan 1. Satu penghormatan seumpama itu yang pertama dan terakhir di Maktab Sultan Ismail.
Aku meninggalkan Maktab Sultan Ismail tidak lama setelah mendapat keputusan PMR, tiga tahun selepas hari pertama aku di situ.
Ya, tiga tahun yang amat bermakna.
Pangkat, jawatan, aktiviti sana sini.
( Kalau aku terus tinggal, agaknya aku boleh upgrade jadi Pengawas Maktab pulak kot !? )
Tetapi sudah menjadi tradisi ahli keluarga aku untuk ke Maktab Rendah Sains MARA selepas Tingkatan 3 dan sememangnya aku berjaya mendapat tempat di Maktab Rendah Sains MARA Pengkalan Chepa ( MRSM ).
Walaupun aku akhirnya pergi meninggalkan Maktab Sultan Ismail, jauh di lubuk hati aku, teramat berat aku rasakan. Dan betapa dekatnya hati aku dengan Maktab Sultan Ismail,
sehingga pernah satu masa di awal tahun pertama MRSM, aku mempertimbangkan untuk pulang semula ke Maktab Sultan Ismail. Kalau tidak kerana Ibu yang keberatan, pastinya aku sudah kembali. Dan boleh jadi juga, jika tidak kerana aku bersetuju untuk terus bersabar, pastinya aku tidak akan tercongok di depan komputer untuk menaip setiap perkataan yang kalian sedang baca ini.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
( Robert Frost (1874–1963) : The Road Not Taken ~ 1916 )
Huuuuuuuuuhhhh ....
Walaupun saban hari aku melintas di depannya, entah mengapa, tiba tiba aku memilih untuk bersemuka dengannya semula hari ini.
Dan pagi itu, pagi yang cerah, tanpa jerebu, aku kembali sekali lagi.
Oh, tidak. Jika aku bisa undur masa dan umur sekalipun,
pastinya tidak untuk bersekolah kembali, mustahil !
Tetapi sekadar mahu menggilap memori silam
mengimbas segala sesuatu yang membawa kepada sesuatu yang lain
dan berterima kasih ........
Alhamdulillah ~
Terima Kasih Sultan Ismail College.
Kini, tingkatan 4 Beta. Zaman aku dulu, tingkatan 3 Jujur.
Walaupun kerusi dan meja jelas sudah bertukar, namun posisi dan gaya asal susunan nampak tidak berubah langsung.
Sebaik sahaja aku merebahkan punggung ke kerusi itu, kenangan silam kembali datang berkejar kejaran.
Aku masih ingat, Omar Khan Rahmatullah Khan duduk di belakang aku dan sepupunya, Shahrullah Khan duduk di sebelahnya. Di sebelah aku, Wan Hilmi Wan Hussin. Di depan pula, Azran Edie Ariffin dan Ahmad Alfishahrein Abdullah Fadzil. Selebihnya, aku ingat ingat lupa.
Oh tidak, aku ingat nama mereka sehingga ke nama bapa mereka bukan setelah merujuk majalah sekolah tetapi telah menjadi trend kami ketika itu untuk memanggil rakan yang lain dengan nama bapa mereka. Walaupun tidak semua dipanggil begitu, ternyata dengan mengambil tahu, dapat dijadikan senjata apabila " digempur " !
He he .. maaf, sekadar terkenang.
Emm ... Sepuluh tahun berlalu, and I wonder, where are they now ?
DALAM MEMORI
Aku tujukan entry ini khas kepada bekas penuntut Maktab Sultan Ismail aka Sultan Ismail College ( SIC ) dan juga kepada semua guru guru dan staff yang telah menyerikan hidup kami selama 3 tahun di sana pada 1994 ~ 1996, walaupun hakikatnya guru yang masih mengajar semenjak itu, hanya tinggal 5 ~ 6 orang sahaja sekarang.
( Kalau tak silap, Cikgu Siti Rekiah yang mengajar Bahasa Melayu dan Ustaz Nazir yang mengajar Pendidikan Islam semasa di Tingkatan 3, adalah dua orang guru yang pernah mendidik aku, yang masih tinggal )
Dan Entry ini aku tujukan juga kepada semua pelawat Fotopage ini yang pastinya turut memiliki kenangan zaman sekolah menengah rendah yang tak boleh dilupakan ( zaman PMR / SRP, boleh lupa ke ? ), tak kira di sekolah mana anda pernah belajar.
Terima kasih semua.
Class Teacher : Mrs. Lim Wan Chu
Class Head : Ahmad Fahmi
Asst. Class Head : Rashdin
Kelas terakhir di Maktab Sultan Ismail.
Sekadar trivia, dalam kelas ini saja, 5 orang telah ke MRSM Pengkalan Chepa. Mana satu aku yer ?
( Tips : Aku adalah yang paling hensem dalam ramai-ramai )
NOTA KAKI :
" Sekolah Transit " :
Istilah aku sendiri bagi merujuk kepada sekolah menengah yang secara otomatik ( tanpa permohonan khas ) menerima pelajar sekolah rendah yang lulus UPSR, dari sekolah tertentu, mengikut ketetapan Jabatan Pendidikan.
Walaupun ia bukanlah sekolah transit atau sementara dalam erti kata sebenar, bukan aku saja bahkan kebanyakan pelajar baru Tingkatan 1 yang aku kenali ketika itu menganggap sedemikian kerana masing masing tidak berhajat untuk terus di situ dan dalam proses memohon untuk ke sekolah yang lebih " ternama ". Memandangkan panggilan rasmi dari sekolah berkenaan pada masa itu adalah lambat, pelajar baru diletakkan di sekolah berkenaan atas saranan Jabatan Pendidikan, agar tidak ketinggalan pelajaran.
Seingat aku, pada masa itu, lepasan SRK Sultan Ismail ( 1 ), ( 2 ) dan ( 3 ),
dimasukkan secara " default " ke Sekolah Menengah Sultan Ismail.
Aku tidak pasti sama ada kaedah ini masih dijalankan atau tidak pada masa sekarang.
