The power of faith...

Friday morning..
..which of course, on normal days look like this..
..the road is closed every Friday morning, only right turn...
View all 6 photos...
..it started when a small number of people frequently attended the weekly "kuliah agama" (religious sermon) at Dewan Zulkifli Muhammad ( a hall ) inside the PAS building, somewhere in the centre of Kota Bharu, Kelantan.. As crowds started to build up each week, which later of course overwhelmed the hall capacity in holding limited numbers of people, people started to spill into the streets in front and around the building to listen to the weekly "ceramah agama" which often made by the current Kelantan Menteri Besar himself ==> Tuan Guru Dato' Nik Aziz... As time passed, the crowds grow and so do the hawkers, who managed to set up make-shift stalls at the spot.... Later, forced by the on-going increase of people (including some undercover Special Branch police) coming for the "ceramah", the local municipal council decided to close the street to passing vehicles starting from 0900 to 1040.. As for Kota Bharu, Friday used to be a very quiet day (as it is like "Sunday" for the state, shops closed, office "tutup" etc) but, sesuai dgn hari yang bagus menuntut ilmu akhirat, Kota Bharu jadi hidup kembali on Friday, tahniah kpd mereka yang berusaha memeriahkan pagi Jumaat yg mulia ini dengan majlis ilmu ... KE ARAH BANDARAYA ISLAM 2005.. nothing is impossible when u believe...

A boring one day trip to KUALA LUMPUR~

Minutes before departure, Kota Bharu Airport..
..over Kota Bharu..
Berjaya Times Square..
View all 12 photos...
...actually I went to KL for a business trip (my very first!), finished my job earlier than expected, had lots of time left to catch my flight back to Kota Bharu (last flight at 2232 to Kota Bharu, btw Kota Bharu now has 14 ~ 16 flights, ie 7 return flights (KB ->KL,KL ->KB) a day! How's that for an "under-developed" state? ), thus leaving me with some extra time to loaf around.. I decided to go to this new Berjaya Times Square shopping mall, quite new in KL, said to be bigger (or is it the same size?) than Mid-Valley Megamall.. entah ler.. Okay ler gak.. Very big, sampai lenguh kaki duk jalan naik turun.. .. I realised there were many Middle-Easterners around.. lots of Westerners too.. I realised that the "surau"s are hidden away where "surau perempuan" is somewhere (do the "treasure-hunting" yourself!) at the 7th floor while the "surau lelaki" , also hidden, at the 8th floor.. Hard to find at first but I managed to find it anyway.. Doing window shopping alone.. arrghh.. hari kerja, sapo yg free? It was so boring..I hurt my feet (the shoes was killing me..) and damn tired too... Later, termenung atas express train en route to KLIA, and killed my time waiting for my flight by watching TV at the airport (suara pengumuman flight lagi kuat dr audio TV) sambil jamu mata tengok orang mundar mandir .. What a day, emm..

..kono machi no keishiki wa, kimi no me ni dou utsuro no? .. Ima no boku wa dou mieru no? .... (lines from "Mr. Children - Kurumi", Mr. Children is a famous Japs. band, their songs often hit no.1 on Japs. music/album charts) ==> Roughly translated : " Dear Kurumi, this town, how does it appears in your eyes? What about me now? How do I appear to you? " ...The song hit no.1 on the chart once, it still reminds me of my last days in Japan especially the day I return to Malaysia and settled down in Kota Bharu... In Japan, I went to a university in Osaka, emmm.... OSAKA, a port-city, an industrial hub (biggest in Japan) older than Tokyo, is in fact the second largest city in Japan (after Tokyo), however the inhabitants are so proud with their city & region (the so-called Kansai region),thus they prefer to behave differently from other Japanese. They are so proud with their dialect, wherever they go (even overseas), they will speak in Japanese Kansai dialect, so thick that one would think that these ppl are not learning anything from their "bahasa kebangsaan".. they are so proud with their food ( such as "Takoyaki" ) that they often look down on cuisines from other parts of Japan , and they are also very proud with their "customs" that they are currently maintaining first place in the whole country "parking offences chart".. ( btw, while other Japanese, stand at the left side of the escalator, they stand on the right side ! Well, Malaysians stand at the middle tho.. ). No wonder, when referring to Osaka, most Japanese will claim jokingly, " Osaka wa Nihon ja nai " ( Osaka is not Japan ) ... ... How do both places appear in my eyes? Well, from Osaka to Kota Bharu, an experience of reverse-cultural shock, now I appreciate both, they both seem "sharing similar traits" & appear as something special in my eyes...

Warung Roti Canai kat Kelantan....

There's something wrong with this picture.. too dark?
..lets light up a bit..emm nope, not the light, emm..
..ah hah!!Found it ! ==> bekas GULA !! Rare indeed...
View all 4 photos...
.. kalau takdok BEKAS GULA atas meja, tak sah !! ROTI CANAI , even though not native to Kelantan (not native to Msia too!)and "quite NEW"(?) to the state, it is not a "strange" snack among the ppl ... Often eaten together with curry or dhal, and currently a popular Malaysian snack, most ppl will attribute "Roti Canai" to the Indian ppl who so happens introduced the food to Malaysia decades ago and now, even the Malay joins this Roti Canai business frenzy too.. But in a land far far away, emm actually about 400km to the northeast of Kuala Lumpur, there is this land where the natives who are already known throughout Msia for having a unique passion for sugary stuff.. and guess what, they enjoy eating Roti Canai with SUGAR !! How they enjoy it with sugar depends on each native's tastebuds but one thing for sure, I went to many "warung roti" across Malaysia but correct me if I'm wrong, only "WARUNG ROTI CANAI" in Kelantan sahaja(?) , yang ada bekas GULA atas meja !!

Morning in Kelantan...

Nasi Kerabu, yellow type, with normal toppings + grilled meat..
Nasi Kerabu, blue type, with normal toppings + "deep fried fish"
Nasi Berlauk Gulai Ayam
View all 6 photos...
.. starts with the famous "Nasi Berlauk"(s)... Unlike ppl from other states, roti canai and nasi lemak and even mee, beehoon, nasi goreng alike are considered second class breakfast treats here in Kelantan. This Nasi Berlauk can be found almost everywhere in the state, from restaurants, coffee shops to roadsides stalls.... Honestly, due to its high calorie, I think this "Nasi Berlauk" is not a very healthy breakfast to a modern society like that of present day Malaysia, where ppl prefer to do indoor activities more than outdoor activities and obesity is a problem.....but when it comes to morning breakfast, I usually stick to this traditional Kelantanese treat !! Hey, at least, when it comes to breakfast in Kelantan, I still left with lots of different gastronomic choices !! ( Btw, my personal favorites are Nasi Kerabu & Nasi Berlauk/Nasi Dagang "Ike Ayo" , usually have two "bungkus" (wrapping; usually in paper) each breakfast )
