SEEING BLUE IN KELANTAN
|
|
The Day When The Rice Turned Blue
I have no idea when and why the Kelantanese,
creatively started to tint their Nasi Kerabu blue.
But, long before articial food colourings were made available on the store's shelves,
the Kelantanese would apply the bluish tone to the special herbal rice dish,
with a natural dye extracted from a purplish blue flower belongs to the Pea family,
known formally in Malay as Bunga Telang.
I learned that this skill is also mastered by others outside Kelantan especially among the Peranakan Chinese ( Nyonya ) for their cakes and sweets, but the Kelantanese probably had gone too far by "experimenting" with the rice !
With artificial food colouring readily available nowadays, the use of Bunga Telang has turned optional.
A street hawker or a restaurant operator would simply resort to artificial ones as a cheaper and fast alternative but in the kampung, the Bunga Telang is still preferred for family feast. I wonder, can you really tell the difference between the naturally dyed Nasi Kerabu from the artificially tinted ones ?
So, do you have your own "Bunga Nasi Kerabu" experience ?
* Formally known as Bunga Telang / Butterfly Pea / Clitoria ternatea, I wonder what they call it in Kelantanese .. emmm..
Kelantanese blue tinted Nasi Kerabu with Salted Duck Egg, Fish Cracker, sliced Roasted Beef, sliced mixed aromatic herbs, fish flakes with roasted grated coconut, dashed with anchovy sauce based gravy ( this one is packed for takeaway )

* Pasir Panjang ( Long Beach ), Perhentian Kecil, Perhentian Islands, Daerah Besut, Terengganu.
* Waiting game, Perhentian Kecil.
Foot Note :
Perhentian Islands, a pair of island, one bigger than another, just off the coast of Besut, Terengganu, Malaysia.
It a a favorite spot to most Westerners coming to the East Coast of the Malay Peninsular and it is said to be one of the most beautiful island in the world.
It is a part of Terengganu,
a Malaysian state neighbouring Kelantan to the north.
Located very close to Kelantan, almost everyone who wish to gain access to the island would do it through the Kota Bharu town, either by road from Thailand and the West Coast, by the jungle train or even by air from Kuala Lumpur. Undeniably, having Perhentian by its side, has contributed much to the Kelantanese economy.

The Kelantan River overflows today,
along with several other rivers in the East Coast, in February .... huh !!??
Yes. Funny.
It is February.
To be exact, the middle of February 2006.
When the Northeast monsoon supposed to cease and give way to the dryer Southwest wind,
when the sky should turn blue, and the boys would enjoy themselves flying the Wau Bulan
but the current weather condition,
unexpectedly morphed into so much like that of December 2004 instead.
If this persist, we would have another great flood in just less than 2 years !
And the strangest is,
it happens in February !!
Never in my life.
UPDATED ( 15th FEB 2006 ) :
In Kota Bharu, the sky started to clear up.
Even though there were minor floodings in some areas in Kelantan ( Jalan Post Office Lama, Kubang Pasu, Penambang and the surrounding riverside areas, in Kota Bharu and some in Kuala Krai ),
I believe that this sudden rainy spell was only the monsoon wishing us goodbye.
To many,
the big flood of 2004 was fun. Strange, I felt sorry for this one, for not turning like it was 2 years ago... he he
( the amazing thing about flood in Kelantan is, the water is calm and most take it as a fiesta ! )
The weather forecaster said that the gloomy weather would go on till next Sunday.
But I say, go fly you Wau Bulan now, boys !!
Note : I am going to miss the cool monsoon season.

Distinctively KeLaTte : BAEKWOH
|
|
BAEKWOH.
Atau " Kenduri Kahwin " dalam bahasa suratnya.
Maaf.
Jemputlah kalian membaca seterusnya sekiranya kalian sanggup menempuh dugaan.
Baiklah. Aku mulakan.
Pembasuh mulut utama : Beleddo ( Agar - Agar ! ), Timung Chino ( Tembikai ! ), Akok ....
TEMPAT JAMUAN BERASINGAN LELAKI DAN PEREMPUAN ! !
Kalau begitu sekalipun niat aku.
Ok. Itu sahaja. Terima kasih atas masa kalian.
Exclusively for Men Only.

|
|
( Distinctively KeLaTte will be right back after this SELINGAN )
There is something I would like to share with my dear visitors.
Something of our forgotten past that many of us were left untold of.
Two rare photos each of Masjid Besar Kota Bharu and Masjid Kampung Laut.
I got these rare shots from the "Buku Cenderamata Kota Bharu Bandaraya Islam", something like a Memorial Album, published by Kota Bharu Municipal Council (MPKB) in relation to the self-declaration of Kota Bharu as an Islamic City, few months back.
The " gift book " featured lots of Kota Bharu aerial shots, the history, descriptions on the people, culture and the future of the town including details on the development projects soon to be done within the municipal area. In fact, It is a gift from MPKB to my workplace, so just don't think of borrowing it from me... he he
Note:
I am not sure whether the book is meant for the general public or not, but in case you could get your hand on it, I would suggest you to keep one. A considerably good insight on Kota Bharu and its future. With lots of photos too.
Do call the MPKB for more details.
A rare photo of a now non-existent Masjid Besar Kota Bharu, said to be taken shortly before the demolition work around 1940s.
The concrete minaret, as can be seen to the right of the photo is in fact one of the existing parts of the present day Masjid Muhammadi. A brick mosque was built in 1920s beside the existing old wooden mosque to support the daily religious services, but only around 1940s the wooden Mosque was finally torn down to give way to the new mosque expansion and upgrading work.
A local heritage that was lost to the advancing of Western ideas of modernisation.
( Click the image above to know more about Masjid Muhammadi of Kota Bharu and its history. By clicking on it, you will be guided to my previous entry on the mosque )
Judging from the old photo of the long gone Masjid Besar Kota Bharu, it is interesting to realise that how much it resembles this 400 years old Masjid Telok Manok or Masjid Wadi Al Hussain in Telok Manok, in Pattani, Southern Thailand.
A very old mosque, remnant from the glorious era of the once famous Islamic Malay Kingdom of Pattani.
Luckily, the Masjid Telok Manok is still exist and obviously in good shape. By looking at this living example of old Malay architecture, perhaps one could get an idea on how the demolished Masjid Besar Kota Bharu must had look like back then. Never been here myself though, wish I could ....
( Click the image above for the image real source )
A rare shot of Masjid Kampung Laut at its original site in Kampung Laut, Tumpat, Kelantan.
This photo, said to be taken in 1960s, shows the condition of the oldest mosque in Malaysia, before the great flood that almost erased it completely from existence.
Note that there was a graveyard by the mosque, probably as old as the structure itself.
If you go to Kampung Laut nowadays and pay a visit to the former, now submerged site of Masjid Kampung Laut, you will notice that only a small plot of the old graveyard still remains as large part of it had long gone with the merciless flow of the Kelantan river.
( Click the image above to know more about Masjid Kampung Laut. By clicking the image, you will be guided to my previous entry on the oldest mosque in Malaysia )

Distinctively KeLaTte : SHEEP ... huh? BIRI BIRI !? BEBIRI !!???
|
|
Betul.
Kerana aku baru sahaja diberi petunjuk !
| Quote: |
.... Dalam buku ilmu alam, biri-biri merino Australia gebu bulunya. Biri-biri Kelantan ini kotor dan bulunya dreadlock. Mereka anak beranak cari makan sambil bernyanyi, "I shot the sheriff but I didn't shoot no deputy." Berderet-deret kambing biri lalu depan rumah aku ....
Petikan dari : Pukul Berapa Datuk Harimau ? , berjudul " DI MANA DIA IBU KAMBING SAYA? "
|
| Quote: |
Sheep. The Sheep of Kelantan are worthy of peculiar notice. There are two distinct breeds, one of which has fine soft wool and only the rudiments of ears, while the other has a stiffer fleece, in which the wool is mixed with hair, and normal ears. The sheep are small and quite unlike those imported from Hongkong to Singapore and Bangkok, neither do they resemble the animals to be seen in Burma and in India. It is not known who first brought sheep to Kelantan and from what part of the world they came ; but whatever their origin, they are now thoroughly acclimatised in this part of Malaya, and are bred in Kelantan, in Patani and to a less extent in Tringganu. Strangely enough, they are not found in other States or Provinces of the Peninsula .....
W.A Graham ( 1905 ) " Kelantan : A State of The Malay Peninsula " ,
published by James Maclehose and Sons, Glasgow (1908) - Chapter XIII : Live Stock, page 85 ~ 86
|
Note on text :
Every word and grammatical expression was copied one by one from the original source and no alterations whatsoever were made.
If you noticed " Terengganu " spelled as " Tringganu " etc, note that you are actually reading a 100 yrs old, pre-World War 1, writing on old Kelantan.
" W.A Graham :
.... There are two distinct breeds, one of which has fine soft wool and only the rudiments of ears .... "
( rudiment : ( Biology ) ; An imperfectly or incompletely developed organ or part )
" ..... while the other has a stiffer fleece, in which the wool is mixed with hair, and normal ears .... "
Kalian lihat ini. Kekata kunci :
" ... The sheep are small and quite unlike those imported from Hongkong to Singapore and Bangkok, neither do they resemble the animals to be seen in Burma and in India .... "
" ... Strangely enough, they are not found in other States or Provinces of the Peninsula ... "
Sesungguhnya, aku sendiri terduduk kehairanan.
Kolam genetiknya jelas mencerminkan warisan Melayu ( baca : Kelantan ) jati.
maka bersegeralah mendapatkan mereka.
kerana
walau dihadirkan beribu ribu biri biri baru sekalipun ( aduh, bersimpul lidah aku ! )
ketahuilah
itulah Bebiri Melayu Terakhir ....
*Sheeps grazing on the Kelantanese plain ( Tok Belian, Bachok, Kelantan )
JANGAN MALU MALU,
BUATLAH MACAM FOTOPAGE SENDIRI, JEMPUT BACA LAGI :

What :
"Renovation" of the wall surrounding Istana Balai Besar.
Where :
The great wooden wall of Istana Balai Besar.
When :
Work currently in progress.
Who :
By the caretaker of the Istana ( read : of course the Istana themselves lah ! )
Why :
I don't know ! Maybe they have a much better idea perhaps ?
How :
Again, I have no idea.
My mistake for not asking the workmen about it in the first place.
From my observation, the work involved taking out the 3 meters high wooden planks which made up the palace wall for more than a century, and replacing them with the brickwork.
The work is currently in progress.
Either they will again place the planks at their places or simply settle down with the new wall, I have no slightest idea.
( I like the way it is though, as it has been years and years ago perhaps from the early days of Istana Balai Besar. The wall itself, being wooden is authentically and romantically Malay artwork, the Spirit Of Wood as some would say... From my personal point of view, it is quite sad that it had to be this way ... )

THE GREAT WOODEN WALL OF ISTANA BALAI BESAR
* Taken in 1905 by the Siamese appointed British Advisor to Kelantan, W.A Graham
( from " Kelantan : A State of The Malay Peninsula, published 1908 ). The wooden wall, 100 years ago.
* The Istana Balai Besar main entrance, as taken in 1980s during the then new Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Ismail Petra ibni Almarhum Sultan Yahya Petra Coronation Ceremony.
Notice the striking differences between this and the present one.
*The wooden wall at present ( 2005 ), before the renovation.
RELATED :
Istana Balai Besar : Now and Then
UPDATED ~ 30th March 2006 ~ :
The wall renovation work was completed prior to the Sultan of Kelantan 2006 Coronation Anniversary.
As earlier expected, the wooden planks were removed and were replaced by a similar in size, fiber board
with wooden texture and then painted with the previous colour.
So, I believe, there goes the spirit of wood !

Distinctively KeLaTte : KEKUDA
|
|
*Kampung Surau Kota, Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
*Pantai Kuala Pak Amat, Sabak, Pengkalan Chepa ( Kota Bharu ), Kelantan.
Kekuda.
Tidak. Bukan bangku.
Tapi rekaan sendiri apabila perkataan " kuda " dijamakkan.
| Quote: |
" Horses. The only horses in the State are imported. The Siam pony, the Deli pony, and the Australian cob all thrive in the country ; but there are very few of them, and they are not much in request except for the stables of H.H. the Raja and amongst the small European population. "
W.A Graham ( 1908 ) " Kelantan : A State of The Malay Peninsula " Chapter XIII : Live Stock, page 89 ~ 90 |
Dia kata Pony.
Saya kata Kuda Padi.
Tak apalah. Asalkan kuda. Jangan kambing.
Tapi itu dahulu. 100 tahun yang lepas.
Kini,
Menakjubkan !
Tetapi ada juga pada lain masa,
mereka akan memperalatkan kekuda
untuk berebut mengejar bola di tengah padang
sambil berbekalkan batang kayu panjang.
Kalu kalian mahu lihat tempat mereka beramal. Nah ! Lihatlah di bawah ini.
* Kemumin, Pengkalan Chepa ( Kota Bharu ), Kelantan.
Akhir kata, tak payah jadi seperti Wan Zaleha Radzi untuk bersukan kuda di Kelantan !
