KOTA BHARU : ~ There Is No Such Thing As Bad Publicity ~
|
|
Perhaps, there is an element of truth from this famous quote by Brendan Behan :
" There is no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary "
After those " ultimate backwater " and " Talibanistic " portrayals of Kelantan
in every local mass media and on the internet forum, blog imaginable,
then those " Kelantan Dalam Gerhana " episodes on TV,
followed by those " Kepialu " havoc or even the " Bird Flu " scare
( before they also got one themselves in Gombak ironically caused by an infected Indonesian fowl ) ,
outsiders and foreigners are still coming to Kelantan
day by day, in droves !
Surely, it is a very normal thing for me
as a proud Kelantanese,
to peacefully live amidst the popular stereotypes and bad publicity
( since we are aware that most are obviously baseless or over exaggerated )
However,
for the visitors to come flowing into Kelantan
despite all those "bad publicities" shrouding Kelantan,
is remarkable and awe inspiring.
Now,
to those Non-Kelantanese out there,
to those who are looking forward to visit Kelantan for the first time
or eager for a next visit,
please tell me
do you have at least one very good reason to come to this reputedly
most notorious corner of Malaysia ?
( Sorry, I am just too curious. You are always welcome to Kelantan tho ! )
Tour buses from outside Kelantan, packing the Sultan Ismail Petra Square ( aka the Istana Balai Besar Square ).
The area saw Kota Bharu started as Kelantan administrative and economic center just over 150 years ago.
Now a favorite spot among tour bus operators to park their vehicles, the square often got congested mainly on school holidays.
The Laman Siti Khadijah,
a walkway with open air cafes, stretching between the Siti Khadijah Central Market and The Buluh Kubu Bazaar.
Mostly quiet on normal days,
weekends and school holidays saw the often elusive gems and traditional medicine peddlers of Kota Bharu, flocking the scene.
Psst, I say :
" There is no such thing as bad publicity,
when the bad publicity is not bad afterall ..... "

Transformasi Bharu
|
|
Nota Penulis :
Koleksi foto di atas adalah sekadar makluman
kepada mereka yang jasadnya di kejauhan
tetapi hatinya tertinggal di Kota Bharu.
Aku.
Sebuah bandar.
Dan transformasi.
Bangunan kayu lama berganti konkrit baru
restoran, pasaraya, rumah kedai, bangunan pejabat, banglo ....
Jalan raya sendat dengan kenderaan
entah dari ceruk mana
plet Kelantan, plet luar, plet Siam .....
haruman diesel dan petrol menusuk saraf olfaktori.
Kaki lima lorong sempit bertempek jasad manusia
gesel sini gesel sana..
Rimas
tapi seronok.
Aku ?
Aku masih lagi di sini
menggaru garu kepala
kadangkala tersengih
melihat
Kota Bharu yang berlenggang
dengan gaya tersendiri
ke hadapan.
Psssst :
Aku harap Kota Bharu menjadi Kota Bharu.
agar sehebat mana Lembah Klang sekalipun
Ditelan mati emak, diluah mati bapa. Mungkin itulah yang berlaku dalam hal ini.
Namun, hidup mesti terus. Walau sayang, salah satu mesti pergi.
bagaimana agaknya nasib mereka kelak.

|
|
Some three years ago,
a friend introduced me to Fotopages.com.
From there, came my first post.
Shortly later, I got my first digital camera.
~ The Fujifilm Finepix F420.
" Smallest Fujifilm camera to incorporate Super CCD HR technology and 30 frames per second video "
( quoted from Digital Photography Review dot com )

Doppleganger 1 : Hey, how come yours is smaller huh ?
Doppleganger 2 : Petrol price went up 30 cent laa bro, so this one is fuel hike special edition, thats why.
First bought in February 2004, I have been using it since.
In fact, 90% of the photos featured here were shot by this F420.
( no surprise cuz the real reason for the F420 was Fotopages.com ! )
With 3.1 M effective pixcels, the F420 print quality is rather low by today's standard.
Plus, the functions are somewhat limited and the image quality is quite frustrating.
To be fair, the size is small which is good ( good for snap and run tactic ! )
but the weight and thickness despite being just nice, still need more attention.
Yet, the handling is easy, the control panel is straight forward, sturdy built
and the LCD screen is comparatively large too.
Other than being an electron guzzler ( which must be its major downside ),
the F420 in general is a great companion for beginners and fun shooters.
Emmm..... considering all those facts,
maybe I should GET a new digicam ....
Sekian. Terima Kasih.
=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~
Psssssst :
My first camera was a cheap Canon, bought in 1999 for a hundred ringgit from the "notorious" Pertama Kompleks.
But after two years at my service, I had it sold to a friend for almost nothing.
It was Spring 2001 in Hachioji, Tokyo that I finally fell in love at first sight with what I called, a " real camera ",
a non-digital Pentax SLR MZ-30 which came along with a 1:4 - 5.6 35 - 80 mm lense.
I added up the arsenal later with a 1:4 - 5.8 100 - 300 mm telephoto lense, and a set Kenko 49 mm filters.
I still own it and as a proud owner, I had put on prints roughly 3000 shots by the MZ-30 alone.

When, the F420 appeared in my life, I put aside the MZ-30.
The size, weight, photo developing cost, double non-rechargeable CR2 batt. ( expensive too ! )
and above all, its incapability to go digital, were the reasons why.
Rarely used except for certain special occasions etc.
Still, the SLR is actually what I wish for a camera.
Having experience with the SLR before plus the need to move along with the change of time,
I think I would love to lay my hand on a spanking new DSLR in near future.
Looking down, deep into my pockets, only God knows when ..... * sigh *
* With my Pentax MZ-30 SLR. No, not that big thing in the background .....

AbSoLuTeLy NOT KeLaTTe : Yasukuni & Yushukan
|
|
What :
A VISIT TO THE YASUKUNI SHRINE AND THE YUSHUKAN
Where :
Somewhere in Tokyo metropolis, in Chiyoda-ku, at a place called Kudan Kita.
When :
On one cool spring day.
Opening hours : 0900 ~ 1730 ( Mar to Oct ), 0900 ~ 1730 ( Nov to Feb ).
Open through out the year.
Who :
Me and few companions, to a shrine dedicated to the Japanese soldiers and civilians,
died in defending / fighting for the nation since the Meiji Restoration.
Why :
The controversy surrounding the Yasukuni Shrine had been around for years, and the latest visit by the Japanese Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi had sparked a renewed tension with neighbouring China and Korea, deemed by the two as insulting act to their bloody past.
So, I wanted to learn more about the shrine and from my research,
there is another irresistible attraction at the site known as the Yushukan.
The Yushukan is a museum, built by the nationalist, to explain to the public and the world on why Japan had to go to war. Housed in it, are various extraordinary collection of war relics and artefacts left by the Japanese militarism, which was put to end by a double atomic blasts 60 years ago.
But one thing about the museum, unlike any other war museum commemorating the World War II in Asia, is that it celebrates Japanese militarism and justifies the WW2 as an act of self defence and freedom fighting.
Interesting, eh ?
So, I happened to be in Tokyo on a business trip for a few days.
Eager to know how the Japanese ( the nationalist ) see the war from their own perspective , I decided to drop by at the Yasukuni and the Yushukan.
How :
Perhaps best reached by Tozai Line ( Kudanshita Station ) from Shinjuku Station.
How much :
800 yen for adult and 500 yen for university/high school student, 300 yen for children ( per entry ).
Conclusion :
From my Yasukuni & Yushukan visit, I learned that the Japanese :
- went to war with Russia to stop the Western power from expanding further into Asia thus saving Asia.
- went to war with China as a self defense against Chinese terrorism.
Previously, the Chinese Nationalist had repeatedly attacked Japanese interests and its nationals residing in China.
- declared war on the US and the British to protest their economic embargo against Japan.
US had stopped supplying the much needed oil to Japan in an attempt to pressure the country to move out its police and military from China - which was seen by the Japanese as a national suicide.
- moved further South into Dutch and British controlled South East Asia to get raw materials
( the ones sanctioned by the US and its allies) .
- invaded other Asian countries to free them from Western grip. " Asia for Asian ".
Honestly, sometimes, it is nice to hear what others have to say.
You may laugh or tease me or even criticise me if you like, for stating them here,
but for sure, I think those must be what the Yasukuni controversy is all about.
Doesn't it ring a bell in your mind that the US is currently at this so called "war on terrorism"
in much like the way Japan went to war decades ago ?
Does it seem that history is repeating itself or at least, going in the same way?
While the consequences of war is about death and destruction,
the Law of The Jungle dictates that the victor will write the history for the masses and the defeated
will settle in pain and embarassment. Now, the defeated finally made its voice heard.
No matter what you will think of it, it is now a fair deal.
One thing for sure,
my visit to the Yushukan has opened a new chapter of thought inside my curious mind.
Come to think of it, when it comes to fighting for your "kepentingan",
that instinct in you would hope that nothing would get in your way or else things would go "rough".
I am not looking forward to any fiery argument on this matter therefore I should not comment further.
Thank you for your time.
Fullstop.

Some descriptions on the Malayan Campaign 1941 ~ 1942 as shown in an exhibition room in the Yushukan.
My hometown, Kota Bharu, in the East Coast of the Malay Peninsula, is clearly stated on the map ( written in Katakana ) as the first Japanese troops landing point on the then British-controlled Malaya. Their mission was to capture Singapore.
A bronze statue, next to the entrance into the Yushukan,
dedicated to the fallen Special Attack Force pilots ( the Tokkoutai or famously known as the Kamikaze ).
Most of them were very young, sent by their superiors to engage the American Pacific Fleet, on a mission of no return.
The legendary Mitsubishi A6M Rei-sen ( Zero Fighter ), restored and on display at the main entrance of the Yushukan.
( The above mentioned Kamikaze pilot bronze statue is at the top, right hand side of this photo )
Japanese artillery guns from Okinawa bearing scars left by American bombardments ( Battle of Okinawa ).

THE MALAYS : Of Lazy and Contented
|
|
It was during my last visit to my former high school.
A friend was talking, maybe about life after SPM, to a curious student.
I was looking at students' presentations nearby when the friend pulled me along.
He introduced me to the young lady,
as a Japanese educated who knows a lot of things about studying in Japan.
Excited, the girl blurted out questions,
I couldnt recall the exact words she said but I remember one of those which obviously sounded like ,
"Payyoh dok ngaji Jeppong? Orghae Jepong ghajing dih, ado kor hok mallah serghupo orghae Melayu ?".
I laughed a little and remember replying with,
" Demo tuh maknusiyyo jugok, serghupo jah "
Honestly,
I don't like the stereotypical idea of labelling the Malays as " lazy ",
and when the word came out from the Malays themselves, my heart breaks.
Even though I would like to basuh her much more,
but thinking that perhaps she was only exagerrating her anxiety over her future,
I decided to end up the conversation after a few exchange of harmless words,
away from the subject I deemed sensitive, for not causing further confusion up in her young mind.
But her words did hit me hard at the right time.
About a month ago, I found this article in the local newspaper.
The comment stole my attention so I decided to have it scanned and kept for future reference.
| Quote: |
This erroneous perception of Malays is
the result of a misunderstanding of the psyche of the Malays.
Most Malay farmers, fishermen and hawkers are hardworking individuals whose
only fault is that they are contented. |
I love the word " CONTENTED " which the writer used.
Perhaps that is the magic word that explains all.
I like how he made up his point by simply putting it as a matter of simple philosophy which is
" wise, pragmatic, balanced and requires a certain presence of mind ".
He even argues that it also " gives more equanimity to one’s outlook on life "
and that " no philosophy that measures success only in monetary terms can be superior ".
Then, there is this old handbook on Kelantan written a hundred years back which I read and would love to recall,
the author, in his honest view on the Malays' working culture, used the very same word - contented !
Maybe I should have told the girl that way
that we are under estimating ourselves to an extent that everything we do and live by are all erroneous, worth lamenting.
I have no further say on this matter.
The article and the book had already made some excellent points againts the popular stereotype.
Therefore, I rest my case.
=========================================================================
Note :
When the Bapa Penulisan Melayu Moden, Abdullah Munshi
wrote in his " Kesah Pelayaran Abdullah Ka Kelantan " ( 1838 ) that the Kelantanese men are a lazy bunch,
an Englishman, Walter Armstrong Graham, the former Siamese appointed British Advisor to the Court of Kelantan ( 1903 - 1910 )
wrote otherwise.
Amazing isn't it ?
I have no idea the real reason why Abdullah Munshi had to put it that way
but it is indeed amazing to see the Mat Salleh aka the notorious penjajah in your history books would came up with such comment which in his time, unthinkable, even to Abdullah Munshi !
( Source : W.A Graham, " Kelantan : A State Of The Malay Peninsula " ( 1908 ), Chap. " The People ", page 19 )

KEMBALI KE SEKOLAH

( mengingati Ulang Tahun ke - 8, aku meninggalkan zaman SPM. Maaf, entry kali ini agak bersifat peribadi )
" Tempat jatuh lagi dikenang...
inikan pula tempat ambik SPM... "
Keputusan PMR
telah membawa aku keluar
dari keserasian di Maktab Sultan Ismail ( SIC ), Kota Bharu, Kelantan
tanpa kerelaan aku ke
Maktab Rendah Sains MARA Pengkalan Chepa ( MRSM PC ),
yang juga di Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
Tanpa kerelaan hati kerana aku hanya mengisi borang
Kisah panjang tetapi dipendekkan,
bukan kerana aku pelajar terbaik
tetapi kerana aku kadang kadang tidak menghadiri kelasnya.
Tidak.
Bukan ponteng.
Cikgu Fizik aku pun begitu. Cikgu Matematik Moden pun sama.
Mereka masih kenal
siapa aku
kerana perkara lain yang tiada sangkut paut.
Ironik.
Namun aku bangga.
" Dongak dik. Nyesal kalau tak dongak. Zaman abang dulu setakat TV cabuk berpakej RTM ngan TV3 sahaja.
Sekarang kamu dah ada ASTRO. Kat Pondok Jaga pun dah ada ASTRO ! Apa lagi yang kamu mahu hah !!?
Psstt.. bilik korang skang dah ada ASTRO gak ker ? "
Kata kata hikmah Pendita Za' Ray :

( Encik Ork, sekiranya anda terbaca, maaf, aku cuma melawak sinis )
Setinggi phD mana pun kita belajar, sejauh mana pun kita pergi mengaji,
sebesar mana pun pangkat kita sekarang
mungkin
