Buat Mereka Yang Berjaya
|
|
SELAMAT HARI RAYA AIDIL FITRI
~ 1 SYAWAL 1427 ( 24 Okt 2006 ) ~
Tahniah.
Anda telah berjaya (?) merentasi sebulan penuh dugaan .... Wallahu a'lam ...
Semoga urusan kalian dipermudahkanNya
di sini dan
di hari perhitungan kelak .......
Jam : 0735
Jam : 0800
Jam : 0850
Jam : 0935
DAN SELEPAS ITU ... JENG, JENG, JENG .... :
My first breakfast after a month of fasting.
Roti Jala with Chicken Kuzi, and a Ketupat Daun Palas.
Unlike other Malays, the Kelantanese often take Roti Jala with Kuzi, a non-spicy, somewhat sweet curry-like gravy ( with bits of almond and raisins ), which usually comes with Chicken or Mutton. Personally I prefer Kuzi over Chicken Curry, even though when it comes to Roti Jala, the latter is well known among many Malaysians.

Kota Bharu : Arghi Wak Ttup'ak
|
|
Arghi Wak Ttup'ak.
Literally means Hari Buat Ketupat or Rice Cake Making Day.
Not that it is a big deal, that even a rice cake needs a special day but it is merely a way to describe the day before Hari Raya or Aidil Fitri. Since it is a tradition for locals to prepare rice cake ( ketupat ), a Hari Raya "signature dish", one day before Hari Raya itself, people ( the Kelantanese ) started to call the day as " Arghi Wak Ttup'ak " .
So, no matter whether they are really into rice cakes or not,
whenever the phrase is mentioned, it is no other but perhaps to describe that one day, normally hectic day, before Hari Raya !
SELAMAT MELENGKAPKAN IBADAH PUASA 1427 H
The last day of Ramadhan ( in Malaysia ).
People rushing into and out of Kota Bharu, flocking shops and supermarkets for last minute holiday shopping, cramping the town small roads and turns with vehicles of all sort.
Since Friday 20th, Kelantanese living outside Kelantan are returning by droves to their hometowns throughout the state, to celebrate Aidil Fitri with fellow Kelantanese friends and relatives. Since the bulk of the population focused in and around Kota Bharu, seasonal heavy congestion of the capital is normally expected.
Did you pay your Zakat Fitrah ?
Zakat Fitrah or Zakat al Fitr is an obligatory charity on every Muslim at the end of the month of Ramadan.
In Kelantan, it has been somewhat a tradition for the needy ones or to be precise, those who entitle to receive their shares of zakat, to gather around the perimeter of Padang Bank, near Masjid Muhammadi, sitting cross-legged on the pavements, road sides or any available surfaces, often with a sack of rice between their knees.
My Zakat Fitrah went straight to the Kelantan State Islamic Council ( Baitul Mal ) thus I dont know how to explain this traditional practice of zakat giving.
But an acquaintance from the Cyber World, helped me with the whole idea and he even has a great explanation to it :
| Quote: |
On every Ramadhan, especially towards the end, one would find a lot
(maybe in hundreds) of tok pakae (fakir miskin) around the mosque and its
adjacent Padae Beng (Padang Bank or Padang Merdeka). Apart from their
'colourful' appearance and nature, they had something in common. All of them
had a small sack of beras (in cupak) , normally in those brown paper bags.
And it was for this:
Papa: 'Caghi hok buto'... he would asked us to. So we did, in the dim street lights...
around the oblong Padae Beng.
And when we found one, Papa would sit in front of him and...
Papa: 'Assalamualaikum. Beghapo sechupok beghah ni?', he asked.
Tok pakae: 'Waalaikum Salae', and told us the price of his sack of rice.
Papa: 'Ambo beli deh', and handed him the money.
Tok pakae: 'Ambo jua', he replied and pushed forward the sack.
Papa then gave back the rice to the Tok Pakae as his zakat fitrah with its required aqad.
A very unique ritual I don't think practised in other states.
( Quoted from Kitab Atok : tuturan alambina ~ The day before )
|
By the way Atok, correct me please, is it really " cupak " or do you mean " gantang " ? ?

AKU TAHU KAMU SUKA MAKAN !
|
|
Perhatian.
Bahan bahan berikut
mampu membuatkan perut anda maju ke hadapan
sekiranya diamalkan selalu
lebih lebih lagi pada Ramadhan ini
Semoga kalian berhati hati.
TUP'AK SUTONG :
Sotong Masak Kicap ?
The above Tup'ak Sutong were bought from a stall at a Pasar Malam in Kota Bharu.
( Click image for the " Pasar Malam ". )
" KELANTANESE MUFFIN " :
Suatu nama yang aku gemar fikir apabila merujuk kepada kuih Piyana ( bukan Piyena yer ! ).
Nice to be eaten warm or cool.
To describe the Piyana, though probably inaccurate, just think of moist Bahulu but with springier buttery texture. Excellent !
( These Piyanas are Nik Yae's. Click image to know more about Nik Yae )
" AKOK ORGHAE SSOLAEK " :
"Akok Orghae Ssolaek" or " High Society Akok " as they were originally made to cater to the demand from the upper classes. Best eaten warm, the best Akok should melt in your mouth the moment you sink your teeth in it !
( These Akoks are Nik Yae's. Click image to know more about Nik Yae )
UPDATED 22 OCT 2006 :
" DEFINITELY NOT GROWN ON TREES " :
Buah Tanjung.
So, Buah Tanjung is actually a misnomer for something that as far as I think I know, is made almost entirely from egg yolk ( of duck eggs ), which is immersed, cooked in a boiling thick syrup and shaped into a teardrop.
An excellent and authentic Buah Tanjung would come in small size, quite exactly the size of the Tanjung fruit where the name was derived, and the texture should be sturdy, silky and not showing signs of crumbling when picked up but would simply melt in your mouth. The above image is an excellent example of a superb quality Buah Tanjung.
( These Buah Tanjungs are Nik Yae's. Click image to know more about Nik Yae )
Nota :
Demi dijadikan modal meminang si komersialisme, wajarkah warisan sendiri digadai ?
SELAMAT BERBUKA PUASA
( Makan biar berkadar kadar. Ibadat biar berganda ganda. )

( 4 ) KELATTE : JALAE ~ JALAE CARGHI MAKAE
|
|
( The 4th series from " KELATTE : JALAE ~ JALAE CARGHI MAKAE " )
RAMADHAN SPECIAL :
Perhaps the sweetest way to further evoke your gastronomical pleasure in Kelantan, is through a visit to the state's Colek eatery.
Colek, ( pronounce : Chol laek ) is a unique Kelantanese snack which in general, comprises anything from battered seafood, fried / grilled chicken, fried spring roll, fish crackers, fish cakes, fried beancurd, boiled cockle, to even inner organs of bovine origin,
served together either with a very mildly spicy but sweet chilli sauce or palm sugar based gravy, either as a dip or to be poured on top.
While the basic idea probably the same, Kelantanese Colek is actually worlds apart from those Rojaks known in the West Coast, with the exceptional of Colek Buwoh, tropical fruit salad with mildly spicy and sweet dressing, which is much like the common Rojak Buah.
There is one eatery that is currently on my most preferred list.
This one located at Jalan Yaakubiah, a stone's throw away from Balai Islam Lundang,
is known to many as Colek Pokok Ceri, or Cherry Tree Colek. There is a big cherry tree by it hence the name.
The spot, though not big, is much favored by many and guess what, even Misha Omar was sighted enjoying her Colek here ! Honest ! I saw her myself last Ramadhan.
Here's what I found in the local paper days ago to prove my claim :
Source : " gitu... lah ! " - Niezam, muka 10, Ruangan Hiburan, Pancaindera ( Utusan Malaysia ) - Ahad, 24 Sept 2006.
..... and no, I am not making this up after having read that ! To Anip & Men, if you read this, I know you guys were there too. I'm defenceless here, just say something !
Emm ... well, on second thought, it's not really a big deal anyway ! ...
Okay, back to the Colek story.
Business hours ?
The eatery open at night, from 2100 hrs for 8 hours or so, but only for the whole month of Ramadhan, which means they only lighten up once a year.
So, if you are a first timer and wish to try this out,
dont wait till next month for the thrill or you have to wait for another year.
Take note that seats are very limited and if you are thinking of coming after 2200 hrs,
my advice would be, unless if you are willing to wait, go for the takeaway !
( if you are unfortunate enough, you even have to queue up for that )
For the note,
this same place also serves excellent Kelantanese Nasi Berlauk / Nasi Dagang on normal days ( morning only ) outside Ramadhan but closes from noon ( do click these images if you wish for more details about it ).
And no, I dont get free Colek from this post.
* NOTE :
Sorry for the gloomy pics, I am still with my old buddy. Looking forward for a new one but probably not in near future.

Siapa menduga siapa menyangka
ku sangka cempedak rupanya ungka.
Aku fikir Pantai Cahaya Bulan sudah tinggal kenangan.
Aku fikir perginya menggilap memori silam.
Aku fikir hilangnya tidak kembali.
Boleh jadi aku terlupa
Chinta Berahi apabila sudah terhakis, perginya sukar kembali.
Tetapi Cahaya Bulan
walau sinarnya disusuli malam gelap gelita
sampai masa
ia tetap bersinar kembali.
Orang kata,
apa ada pada nama ?
Aku kata,
pada nama ada doa.
DAHULU ( 31 DEC 2004 )
Sekali lihat
hamparan pasir itu begitu menggiurkan
menggoda perasaan yang dahulunya
kecewa
berputus asa.
Sabar.
Nanti
bila malam bulan purnama
aku nak ke pantai, bawa tikar
aku mahu terlentang mendongak langit
aku ingin mengira bintang merenung bulan
sambil dibelai bayu
Pantai Cahaya Bulan.
Pesanan Penaja :
SELAMAT MENYAMBUT
RAMADHAN AL - MUBARAK 1427
Wallahu a'lam....

TO' UBAN : One Noon By The Ghostly Lake
|
|
Danau To' Uban.
Presumably the largest natural freshwater lake in Kelantan
with acres of surrounding marshlands, lush greeneries and distant hills.
Located in a very secluded and virtually hidden corner of To' Uban in
Jajahan Pasir Mas, Kelantan state.
Deserted, kind of feeling.
Small herds of water buffaloes grazing nearby.
Free from gasoline fumes and noises of passing vehicles.
Few government-sponsored floating fish farms dotting the watery landscape.
Would be a great ecotourism spot if wisely developed and promoted.
Wisely....
should I repeat that ?

To the right is the Kelantan River - which could serve as a simple comparison on how big the natural lake is. Using the scale shown, the lake must be 6 km long and 500 meters wide. Image borrowed from Google Maps.

Selamat Tinggal Raungbauk Kijae
|
|
Time passed...
Things changed.
Places changed.
Faces changed.
We changed.
Farewell Raungbauk Kijae
it was nice growing up with you....
What was before :
Raungbauk Kijae on one of those final days. Photo courtesy of Perakan.net
Raungbauk Kijae on Google Earth. So it was.
What is Now :
A mixture of some demolished houses and a leveled roundabout, produces a widened bridge, roads, a junction and a probable solution for Kota Bharu ever increasing traffic congestion problems.
SO, WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL WITH ~ RAUNGBAUK KIJAE ??
Raungbauk Kijae or Bulatae Kijae is a local term for a roundabout located at a meeting point of four Kota Bharu main roads ~ the Jalan Hamzah, Jalan Kg Sireh, Jalan Sultanah Zainab and Jalan Kota Bharu ~ Pasir Pekan ( the Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge ).
It was a roundabout with a fountain in the middle. There were even several Kijae or Kijang ( Muntiacus muntjak ) effigies, lining the edge of the rounded pool, spouting water towards the center, hence the name, Raungbauk or Bulatae Kijae, among the locals.
The effigies were later disposed in early 1990s, as it was deemed un-Islamic by the ruling local government. But the name sticked until the roundabout is no more.
Before there were Tendong Bridge ( or casually known as Ghertock Berghaehaeng Ali ), Pasir Mas ~ Salor Bridge and Tanah Merah ~ Machang Bridge or even the newly completed Jambatan Dabong, there was only a single road bridge, over the Kelantan River.
The Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge, completed in 1965 was the only one of such kind
and it was not until 30 years later when the second link ( the Tanah Merah ~ Machang link ) was finally built, followed shortly after by the now existing bridges.
If I am not mistaken, the Raungbauk Kijae came with the completion of the Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge.
So, after all those years, I believe there is no way to deny how significant Raungbauk Kijae must had been to most Kelantanese or perhaps to the outsiders as well.
Being the most favorable gateway ( as it still is, despite other links ) into West Kelantan ( Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Wakaf Bharu, Rantau Panjang, Pengkalan Kubor etc ) from Kota Bharu and vice versa, the bridge alongwith the roundabout must had given a lot of fond memories to those who spent their growing up days in Kelantan.
At least to me, it was something to remember.
The late Sultan Yahya Petra at the opening ceremony of the bridge connecting Kota Bharu with Tumpat ( 17th April 1965 ). The 840 meters long bridge was named after the Sultan's.

The riverbank at left is currently being developed into new commercial and living areas.
Note :
I hope my dear readers could help me with photo(s) of Raungbauk Kijae during its heyday,
do email it to me if you have one so that I could share it with everyone else here and dont worry,
I'll make sure the credit goes to the right place.
