~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Selamat menyambut Ramadhan 1430 H ...
hasil bidikan-bidikan lensa berupa wajah-wajah
MASJID JUBLI PERAK SULTAN ISMAIL PETRA
( atau meniti di mulut para marhaen tempatan sebagai ' Masjid Beijing ' ! )
yang setakat ini tiada seumpamanya di Malaysia,
terletak nun jauh di pekan Rantau Panjang, Jajahan Pasir Mas, Kelantan
( atau sebetulnya disebut, Ghataa Panjae, Jajohhae Paseir Mah, Kelattae ! )
yang khabarnya akan dirasmikan pembukaannya
dalam bulan Ramadhan ini ...
( ya, ianya masih belum dibuka kepada umum ! )
Akhir kata,
SALAM 1RAMADHAN ~ !
Pada majlis itu, Menteri Wilayah Persekutuan, Senator Datuk Raja Nong Chik
Raja Zainal Abidin membuat satu pengumuman penting yang tidak diduga.
Kerajaan membenarkan masjid Cina dibina di ibu kota tidak lama lagi.
Berita gembira itu mendapat reaksi positif Pengerusi Macma, Datuk Dr. Mustapha
Lumpur. Impian itu bakal menjadi kenyataan dalam masa terdekat.
"Atas semangat gagasan 1Malaysia yang menekankan konsep Rakyat
* Komen Penulis :
Artikel di atas tidak pula menyentuh tentang masjid bersenibina Cina di Rantau Panjang, Kelantan.
Tidak pula dapat dipastikan adakah ' Masjid Cina ' yang boleh kata telah pun siap sepenuhnya di Kelantan itu sama konsepnya dalam segala hal ( yakni bukan setakat senibina ! ) dengan ' Masjid Cina ' yang dicadangkan dan dipersetujui pembinaannya oleh Kerajaan Persekutuan di Kuala Lumpur ...
Tak apa ! Sama-sama kita saksikan selanjutnya !
p/s :
Kalau setakat senibina, nampaknya Kerajaan Kelantan sudah lama mendahului !
RANTAU PANJANG: The RM8.8mil Sultan Ismail Petra Silver Jubilee Mosque, the first Chinese-style mosque in the country, is set to open its doors this Ramadan.
The mosque, also known locally as the Beijing Mosque, has a unique design that combines Chinese and Islamic architecture similar to the more than 1,000-year-old Niujie mosque in Beijing.
Developed on a 3.7ha land along the Kota Baru-Rantau Panjang road, visitors could mistakenly think it is a Chinese temple due to its pagoda-like structure.
Construction of the mosque started on Sept 12, 2005
Thank you Mr. Iruasta .. ( or sometimes ' Atsauri ' .. eheh )
I grinned when I read that ...
To tell the truth, I have been thinking of making a post about it for already quite some time.
The reason why I chose to 'hold it back' is solely due to the fact that I had no clear idea of what really or should represent the true ' rumah ore keluaran / kebanyakan ' of Kelantan which, in my opinion, has to be above all, distinctively Kelantanese.
Most ' old ' timber houses that we see throughout Kelantan today were actually built after or just before the World War II, easily identified through the integration of many non-native styles, materials and architectural elements in their construction and design. Styles and elements which are either strikingly European in origin or obviously copied or based on those houses typically found on the other side of the Peninsular. Simply put, they hardly represent Kelantanese traditional dwellings as existed in the past, particularly the ones that used to dot the Kelantanese landscape prior to the British arrival.
So, the question here is, what kind of existing structure possibly best represent ( should I use the word 'true' and 'authentic' ? ) traditional dwellings of the common Kelantanese ?
I was wondering and wondering, going through this and that, observing here and there, acquiring and losing ideas until a news popped out in a local newspaper about a month ago. Nothing out of this World but an announcement, more like a promotional attempt by Pos Malaysia on the then soon-to-be-released new set of postage stamps.
( Note : I used to be an avid stamps collector when I was way lot younger ... )
It features traditional dwellings of native Malaysians, houses that are said to represent the identity of each state in the Federation of Malaysia. A set of 16 postage stamps depicting traditional wooden Malay, Orang Asli and other Bumiputeras' houses of Malaysia, and as expected, a piece is dedicated to the state of Kelantan.
On it, a drawing of ' Rumah Tiang 12 ' of ' Kelantan ' :
* Edited image of the original, courtesy from Smsphilatelic's Blog.
The piece somewhat confirmed on what I already hold onto,
that the ' Rumah Tiang 12 ' or ' Rumah Tiang Dua Belas ' *....
* tiang = pillar, altogether pronounced : Roo-mah Tee-young Doer Buh-last or anything close as long as not ' Rumah Tiang Twelve ' or ' Rumah Tiang Jyuu-Ni ' !
.... is exactly the type of house, which I strongly believed, were very common among native, ' keluaran / kebanyakan ' Kelantanese before World War II !
The construction is simple and rather straightforward but nevertheless, of brilliant design.
While the main frame was usually of hardwood timber joined merely by wooden pegs ( pasak ) of similar quality, the wall can range from as simple as " kajang / buluh sasak " ( woven bamboo strips ), to the intricately put-up, high taste " Janda Berhias " ( paneled wall ), and even to non-conventional corrugated iron sheet ! *
* Kajang : - Abdullah Munshi mentioned many times about ' kajang ' walled houses in Kelantan in his travel journal, on his journey to Kelantan in 1837.
* Corrugated Iron : - described in detail under ' additional supplements ' below ...
Though it is quite ironic when the image on the stamp itself doesn't seem to portray a house with 12 pillars ( .. emmm ... well, it looks instead like a Rumah Tiang 16 to me ), the basic concept is there and well presented. In other words, the distinctive pillar placements, the signature long roof and the single living space it created, are typical to many timber dwellings from that period, as can be seen through some examples which I managed to identify in Kota Bharu.
For easier reference, I posted up here several photos of some existing very old Kelantanese Malay timber dwellings which somehow fit the above mentioned concept, houses that I strongly believed were erected around the end of the 19th century ( maybe much earlier ) or early 20th century, up to the few years before the start of World War II. Of course, there is also another type known as Rumah Bumbung Perabung Lima to look into. However, since the latter appeared in Kelantan later than the Rumah Tiang 12 or 16, I shall not discuss about here. At least, not now.
( Above all, it is really sad to know that only a mere handful of such remarkable, old and distinctively traditional Kelantanese timber dwellings still left in Kelantan. Most are in bad shape, dilapidated, deteriorating structures that are very probably despised by their own owners, waiting to be bulldozed, to give way to newer, modern ones ~ )
So, if you ask me what common Kelantanese ( ore keluaran/kebanyakan ) in our pre-colonial past might had picked up for their homes, that is my opinion.
To be honest, I am no expert in this field and what stated here are all based on my own observations, topped with rough research and readings.
Well Mr. Iruasta, what say you ?
ADDITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS !
' WHEN WOOD GAVE WAY TO CORRUGATED IRON '
* Outside the Raja Muda's house, Kota Bharu.
A street scene, just outside the high walled residence of the ' Raja Muda ' in 1905.
The photo was taken by W.A. Graham, a Bangkok appointed British officer who served
in Kelantan in the early 1900s. This photo, along with quite a number of other photos of
Kelantan from the time, appeared in Graham's Kelantan : A State of The Malay
Peninsular, first published in Glasgow, in 1908.
I will touch on the ' Raja Muda ' later.
First, what I really would like to point out from the above 100 years old shot is the two
storey building on the left hand side. Notice the rectangular window with vertical wooden
bars, partly hidden by the roof of a much lower structure. The wall where it is attached to
is made out of corrugated iron-zinc sheet. Likewise, even the wall ( lower one ) seen on
the right seems to be made from the same material.
It might be hard to tell through this resolution alone but judging from the original, a much
higher resolution image in my possession, it appeared ( obviously ) to be so. Even the
author himself did admit to it, on page 28 - Chapter IV Towns and Villages :
So it proves that pre-colonial Kelantan was not entirely of wood.
At least, we know that, beginning from the late 19th century, corrugated iron ( probably
introduced into Kelantan from Singapore ) started to gain popularity and come into wide
use in the state, as observed by Graham, for the " construction of houses ". Not sure
what he meant by " construction of houses ", but I strongly believe ( plus, judging from
the above image ) that it was not just for the roof.
So, the next time you see a seemingly century old house with corrugated iron for walls
( or even for roofing ) instead of the usually anticipated ( also much romanticized )
" Dinding Janda Berhias ", don't simply dismiss or overlook it as you are very much
probably looking at the real deal from that period.
Here, in this entry, I posted some images of pre-War and ( what I strongly believed
to be ) century old houses with corrugated iron walls. Also notice the signature window
from the period, the rectangular, small windows with wooden frame and poles.
Luckily, in Kota Bharu alone, houses with such walls and windows are still there to be
found along Jalan Post Office Lama and Kampung China, albeit in fewer numbers.
Now for the " Raja Muda " part.
( I know it is not related to our current topic but believe me, it is equally noteworthy ~ )
I did my own research and through royalark.net , have a good reason to believe that the
Raja Muda as referred to by W.A. Graham in the above photo caption was no other but
Tengku Long Zainal Abidin ibni Sultan Muhammad III ( b. 1875 ~ d. 1945 ) who was also
known as either Tuan Zainal Abidin or Tengku Zainal Abidin, but better known as Raja
Dewa. Simply put, the house belonged to Raja Muda aka Raja Dewa.
When his brother, Tengku Long Senik took to the throne as Sultan Muhammad IV
( reign. 1900 ~ 1920 ), Tengku Zainal Abidin was bestowed the title of Raja Muda
( the Heir Presumptive ) of Kelantan. Not to be confused with the Heir Apparent who
was Tengku Ismail, the eldest son of Sultan Muhammad IV who at the time was in his
early 20s, and carried the title Tengku Sri Indra Mahkota ( 1901 ). Tengku Ismail
later succeeded his father in 1920 as Sultan Ismail and with the new Sultan in power,
Tengku Zainal Abidin found himself ' promoted ' from Raja Muda to the title of Raja Dewa,
according to the same site, in 1944. Thus explaining why he was better known today by
the name Raja Dewa instead of Raja Muda.
So, what's up with Raja Dewa ?
First, the present day Jalan Raja Dewa was named after the man.
Secondly and most importantly, Raja Dewa was the ' first-hand owner ' of the newly
restored, historical Masjid Lama Mulong, the structure which before being turned into a
mosque for the people of Mulong in the 1950s, was his Balairong Seri ( meeting hall ),
which was built in the early 1900s - presumably, behind those very walls as seen from
the above photo.
For those who wish to ' know ' Tengku / Tuan Zainal Abidin better, he could be seen
here, in this rare shot taken during a visit by the then British Straits Settlements Governor,
Sir John Anderson to Kelantan in July 1909 :
Unfortunately, I have no idea where in modern day Kelantan, the shot ( of the house ) was taken.
If only I could be assured of the real location, it could be easier for me to prove the original
location of Balairong Seri Raja Dewa before being moved to Mulong.
An old map of Kota Bharu that I came across at work, revealed that there was a road
by the name Jalan Raja Muda at what is now Pelangi Mall Condo and Shops, next to
Jalan Post Office Lama, close to the Kelantan River, not far from Istana Balai Besar.
Perhaps it was somewhere there hence the name.
Interestingly the following news articles ( HERE and HERE ) on Masjid Lama Mulong seems to support my belief.
* An old but well maintained structure by Jalan Post Office Lama.
Not sure about the real age but I am attracted to what seemingly features of Rumah
Tiang 12 and the verandah that is much resembling the Kelantanese shop houses of the 1900s.
( see also : KELATÉ & PRE-WAR SHOPHOUSES : Hunting For The Remnants )
Note that the walls and verandah are made of corrugated iron sheet.
recent addition but from the farthest past.
Photographed by W.A.Graham in 1905, in Kota Bharu Kelantan.
Notice the applied ' perabung lima ' and the tiered, long roof concept.
Singhorra tiles for the roof and a luxurious coat of cement for the base and roof sealant.
Even in the early 1900s, houses are not entirely of wood, especially among the nobles.
I wonder whose house was this and where it was located ?
STREETS OF KOTA BHARU : A Whole New Driving Experience !
.
STREETS OF KOTA BHARU :
A Whole New Driving Experience !
This goes to all out there ....
... especially to ' overseas ' Kelantanese, non-Kota Bharu residents Kelantanese, non-Kelantanese and also extraterrestrial beings,
who are planning to drive through the town of Kota Bharu from August 2009.
( be it a Ramadhan escape, or Balik Raya trip, or just .. whatever ! )
Beginning 11 August 2009, a very significant traffic flow makeover will take place in Kota Bharu, affecting several major ' arteries ' which run through the heart of the town.
The following map, derived from MPKBBRI's official website, explains further.
A click on the map will direct you to the whole story :
* Kota Bharu's New Traffic Flow Map, as taken from MPKBBRI's official website
For the note, ' traffic light ' icon in light blue ( turquoise ? ) shows existing, currently in
operation traffic lights while the one in dark blue, are the additional, new ones soon
to be set up following the traffic makeover.
Oh, and the black one indicates soon to be removed, existing traffic light.
Interesting ...
While New York City is closing the traffic lanes through its iconic Times Square and turning them into pedestrian plaza, Kota Bharu is opening up its own version of pedestrian plaza, the one located between Jalan Temenggong and Jalan Doktor / Parit Dalam, for cars to pass through.
The ' plaza' itself is formerly a part of Jalan Tok Hakim which used to stretch from the very edge of Kelantan River ( next to present day Hotel Grand Riverview ) all the way up to the intersection of Jalan Padang Garong and Jalan Doktor / Parit Dalam. It was closed to traffic some 20 years ago and was turned into a pedestrian path, equipped with kiosks and rest pavilions - later known as Dataran MPKB.
I could still vividly remember, as an innocent child who loved to place his forehead against the windows of his mom's Fiat 131 SuperMirafiori, that the last time I travelled down the road ( in mommy's car ), was when the roadside Hajah Halimah's Murtabak, Satay Razak, Mississippi Fried Chicken, Beng Huat Mini Market and Ichiban Karaoke were still operating ! Ha ha ha ha ...
( oh, and also when Pasar Malam Parit Dalam was still there, glittering and very lively .. )
Well, I don't know what drivers then truly felt about it ( I was not one yet ) but I grew up finding it helpful, knowing for sure that the move was much appreciated by the pedestrians. People, especially those going to and coming from the Stesen Bas Kota Bharu, could walk the distance safely between Pasar Besar Kota Bharu ( Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah as it was known then ) and the shops of Jalan Padang Garong, Jalan Dato' Pati and Jalan Hilir Pasar, with less chance and worry of being hit by motorised vehicles.
While I am always in favour of having a 'pedestrian plazas' in the heart of Kota Bharu, my views on the closed Jalan Tok Hakim started to change with the ever increasing traffic issues of Kota Bharu. To add things worse, the pedestrian plaza fell into a somewhat neglected condition, broken tiles left unreplaced, poorly maintained kiosks and pavilions which slowly turning it into a public eyesore. The reopening is indeed a good move, comes at the right time.
As for the whole thing, I am not sure whether they are going to be permanent or just some kind of traffic study or maybe a trial of some sort ( like the Times Square's case ). I have this strong feeling, by looking at those newly made ' grooves ' in the middle of the streets where lamp poles and road dividers used to be, that the former is more likely.
One thing for sure, when it is successfully implemented, the traffic flow will be nothing like before. Some main two way streets will turn into a much wider one way, while some existing one way streets will be made to flow from the opposite direction. There will be new sights to behold and old sights to be missed. Driving through Kota Bharu is surely going to be a whole new, perhaps also, a strange experience to most people ...
Whether the outcome be good or otherwise, things are still early to foresee.
Only one thing that could be totally certain of.
After this coming 11 August 2009,
I will be " seeing " Kota Bharu like never before .....
* Kota Bharu's New Traffic Flow Map. From an MPKBBRI's handout.
To help my dear readers see through this makeover, I did some minor adjustments to
the original map by adding yellow ' highlighting ' marker and numbers ( figures in red )
to associate each street shown on the map with photos of each affected street, which
I managed to snap and posted here.
Here are some of those shots :
* Jalan Gajah Mati
( soon, a four lanes one way, towards the Gajah Mati traffic light )
* Jalan Hospital
( soon, a four lanes one way, towards the roundabout )
* Jalan Tok Hakim
( soon, a four lanes one way, towards Padang Garong. Notice that the Dataran MPKB
is no more, currently being turned back into what it was 20 years ago ... )
* Jalan Padang Garong
( soon, a four lanes one way, towards the Jalan Mahmood traffic light )
* Jalan Doktor
( soon, a two lanes one way, towards Jalan Parit Dalam )
* Jalan Pintu Pong
( soon, a two lanes one way, towards Pasar Siti Khadijah )
* Jalan Temenggong
( a four lanes one way to be, towards Istana Balai Besar. Notice the removed divider )
* Jalan Buluh Kubu
( soon, a two / four lanes one way, towards KBTC )
Oh, by the way ...
the billboard seen on the building, straight ahead is an advert for iPhone3G service by Maxis.
When enlarged, you got this :
* iPhone3G Advert in Jawi
Billboard ads in Jawi. A common sight in Kota Bharu ...
( why on Earth didn't they put the word ' iPhone ' in Jawi ?? Arghh ! )
Peniaga gembira Jalan Tok Hakim dibuka semula
KOTA BHARU 20 Julai - Para peniaga di sekitar Jalan Tok Hakim di sini menyambut
baik langkah pihak berkuasa untuk membuka semula jalan berkenaan pada
pertengahan bulan depan.
Menurut mereka, langkah itu bukan sahaja merancakkan perniagaan yang malap
sekian lama, malah membantu mengurangkan masalah kesesakan di pusat bandar
terutama di sekitar Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah.
.
.
.
Sementara itu, Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Kerajaan Tempatan, Pelancongan dan
Kebudayaan, Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan ketika dihubungi berkata, pembinaan jalan
tersebut sedang rancak dilakukan dan berharap ia akan dibuka menjelang hari raya.
''Buat masa ini pembinaan sedang dijalankan, cuma kita berharap kontraktor yang
terlibat dapat mempercepatkan kerja-kerja yang dilakukan termasuk membuka pagar
berhampiran Pusat Dagangan Kota Bharu (PDKB),'' katanya.
Selain pembukaan semula jalan itu, bagi melancarkan lagi aliran trafik beberapa
perubahan akan dibuat iaitu Jalan Hospital dari lampu isyarat menuju ke Bulatan Tuan
Padang akan ditukar daripada dua hala kepada sehala.
''Jalan Temenggong turut dijadikan jalan sehala menghala lampu isyarat Jalan Tok
Hakim.
"Selain perubahan haluan lalu lintas ini, beberapa lampu isyarat baru akan dipasang
iaitu di Jalan Sultan Ibrahim menuju ke persimpangan Jalan Mahmood dan beberapa
lampu isyarat akan ditutup iaitu berhampiran Bazar Buluh Kubu dan lampu isyarat Jalan
Hospital berhadapan dengan mahkamah," katanya.
Distinctively KeLaTte :
Juwwaa Blae Dudok ...
Ramai kata suasana pasar-pasar di Kelantan adalah unik.
Terutamanya bagi mereka yang datang bertandang dari luar.
Rata-rata kagum dan terkesima dengan penglibatan aktif kaum wanita dalam perniagaan sehingga ada yang terus menyimpulkan bahawa orang lelaki Kelantan sebagai pemalas dan hanya gemar melepak di kedai kopi !
Tak kurang juga yang berminat dan tertarik dengan barangan yang diperdagangkan, dari jenis-jenis makanan atau sayuran yang tiada ditemukan di tempat sendiri ( seperti Etok dan Lada Solok ! ) sehinggalah kepada pelbagai produk tekstil .... yang saya sendiri pun hairan, apa sebenarnya yang dicari mereka ?
Apa-apa pun, dalam banyak-banyak feedback yang pernah saya pernah terima berkenaan keadaan pasar di Kelantan ( emm ... selain soal bau dan isu kebersihan ), saya tertarik dengan satu komen, yang menyebabkan saya termenung sejenak, dalam apa yang orghae puteh sebut ' deep in thought ' dan akhirnya turut sama bersetuju ...
... bahawa orghae Kelate berghaehii juwwaa blae dudok ! *
( * gemar berniaga sambil duduk )
Betul juga yer ...
Memang itulah antara perkara utama yang membezakan iklim perniagaan di Kelantan berbanding di negeri-negeri lain.
Satu tradisi yang telah diamalkan sejak sekian lama,
tetapi nampaknya tidak begitu dipandang istimewa oleh warga Kelantan sendiri ....
* Pasar Kota Bharu, 1920.
Kalangan kaum wanita yang agak berumur biasanya merupakan pemain utama.
Kerap muncul dengan busana tradisi Kelantan, berkain batik, bertudung atau bersemutar, berwarna-warni, dengan gaya yang cukup bersahaja dan begitu ' down to earth ' ( pun intended ! ) ..
Kebiasaannya mereka akan menyasarkan mana-mana lokasi keramaian yang dikira berpotensi. Selalunya ( tetapi tidak semestinya ) ke pasar-pasar. Biasanya mereka akan datang bersama barang-barang dagangan dengan bantuan ' prebet sapu ' ( kereta upah ) dan adakalanya dengan ' teksi ' ( kecek Kelate untuk ' beca ' ) ... di mana yang terkemudian itu lebih banyak digunakan suatu masa dahulu.
Setibanya di ' drop zone ' yang dimaksudkan, bagi yang tiada tempat tetap, mereka akan menjajah mana-mana sudut yang strategik dan dengan hanya beralaskan guni, helaian suratkhabar, nyiru, besen plastik atau dulang-dulang logam, mereka akan beraksi dengan pertaruhan masing-masing. Pertaruhan dalam bentuk pelbagai hasil pertanian, produk-produk desa sehinggalah kepada beraneka hidupan sungai dan segala macam penghuni laut ....
Apa yang menarik, aksi mereka sering sahaja menjadi santapan lensa-lensa tukang gambar baik yang amatur mahupun yang profesional. Fotogenik dan unik, kata si tukang-tukang gambar. Sehinggakan suasana pasar yang paling banyak dirakamkan di
Malaysia, dikatakan tidak lain tidak bukan, percaya atau tidak ....
.... adalah bahagian ruang tengah Pasar Siti Khadijah !
* Kota Bharu, 2009 - ruang tengah Pasar Siti Khadijah.
Walaupun suasananya tidak lagi sehebat dulu, tetapi masih menyengat !
* Kota Bharu, Awal 2009.
Bahagian Buah-buahan Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah.
Kini sedang digantikan dengan satu blok bangunan pasar baru ( dalam pembinaan ).
* Pasar Wakaf Bharu, 2009
Pasar ini agak baru setelah dipindahkan dari satu lokasi berdekatan.
Saya masih ingat dahulunya ia terletak tidak jauh dari Stesen Keretapi Wakaf Bharu
dalam bentuk deretan kedai-kedai kayu yang menjual pelbagai sayuran kampung dan makanan unik .... termasuklah belalang !
Saya kagum dengan pasar ini kerana pembinaannya mengambil kira tradisi berniaga
masyarakat Kelantan ...
* Jalan Dato' Pati & Jalan Hilir Pasar, Kota Bharu - 2009.
Kawasan ini bukanlah pasar yang digazet.
Sebaliknya telah menjadi tumpuan peniaga sebagai mengambil kesempatan orang
ramai yang berpusu-pusu mendengar ceramah mingguan YB Dato' Menteri Besar
Kelantan yang sering diadakan setiap pagi Jumaat di perkarangan Bangunan
PAS di Jalan Dato' Pati.
Namun demikian, sayang sekali ...
.. kerana apa yang saya dapat perhatikan sekarang adalah rata-rata pembangunan melibatkan infrastruktur pasar di seluruh Kelantan seolah-olah tidak lagi menitik berat atau menumpukan kepada aspek keunikan tradisi masyarakat Kelantan ini ....
Ruang niaga yang disediakan kini adalah dalam bentuk meja simen yang memerlukan peniaga untuk berurusan dalam keadaan berdiri, hanya duduk sekali sekala di kerusi semasa ketiadaan pelanggan. Tak ubah sebagaimana keadaan pasar-pasar lain di Malaysia. Mudah kata, tiada lagi keunikan !
Saya tidak pasti kenapa ianya dibuat sebegitu rupa sedangkan, saya ambil satu contoh, Pasar Wakaf Bharu yang agak baru itu boleh sahaja mengadakan ruang niaga yang mesra konsep ' juwwaa blae dudok ' ini ?
Boleh jadi ianya disebabkan wujudnya isu berkaitan sanitasi atau kebersihan.
Dalam keadaan duduk sama aras dengan barang dagangan yang pula diletakkan di atas lantai dengan hanya beralaskan guni atau surat khabar - mungkin boleh mengundang perasaan jengkel bagi mereka yang tidak biasa.
Boleh jadi juga kerana rekabentuk sedemikian mampu mengoptimumkan bilangan ruang niaga dalam sesuatu bangunan ?
Atau mungkin kerana sebagai memenuhi keinginan, kehendak dan permintaan dari para peniaga sendiri ?
Entah lah ...
* Kota Bharu, 2009 - Blok Tambahan baru, Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah.
* Kota Bharu, 2009 - Bangunan baru Pasar Wakaf Che Yeh.
Apa-apa pun, apa yang pasti, secara peribadi, saya seronok dan berbangga melihat keadaan sedemikian, lebih-lebih dalam keadaan ianya masih banyak diamalkan, kerana ianya melambangkan keunikan budaya masyarakat Kelantan itu sendiri.
Selama saya berkelana di pasar-pasar di Semenanjung, tidak pernah lagi saya saksikan keadaan sedemikian. Setidak-tidaknya boleh berfungsi secara tidak langsung sebagai salah satu ' produk pelancongan ', khas bagi mereka yang gemarkan keunikan sedemikian ( saya yakin, ramai ! ) dari luar sana dan dari kalangan rakyat Kelantan sendiri. Boleh jadi di mata pihak yang berkenaan, ianya sukar dibenarkan untuk terus diamal kerana digenangi pelbagai isu tetapi ini tidaklah bermakna kita mesti menidakkannya langsung ...
Tak apa lah ...
Mungkin suatu masa nanti,
kita akan kembali sedar dan boleh sama-sama membantu menyuburkan serta memartabatkan konsep ini semula.
Kerana bukan sahaja kita perlu berbangga
tetapi juga kerana kita perlu ingat ..
biar apa pun kita lakukan ...
biar apa pun kita mahukan ...
biar apa pun kita harapkan sekalipun ...
tradisi bukanlah sesuatu yang semudah itu boleh dimatikan ~
KELATÉ & PRE-WAR SHOPHOUSES :
Hunting For The Remnants ...
| Quote: |
A shophouse is a vernacular architectural building type that is both native and unique to
urban Southeast Asia. This hybrid building form characterises the historical centres of
most towns and cities in the region.
From Wikipedia - Shophouse
|
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I dedicate this entry ....
no, not to ' Gemuloh ' Michael Jackson or Farrah Fawcett
but to the remaining pre-war shophouses of Kelantan, especially to the wooden ones
for the the worries and concern that I have for their uncertain future
on the rapidly developing and changing landscape
of this unique Malay State of the East Coast ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Rows of wooden shophouses in 1905 Kota Bharu.
Reliable sources indicate that this shot was taken somewhere around present day
Jalan Tengku Petra Semerak, close to Jalan Tok Hakim and Jalan Che Su in Kota Bharu.
*Image from W.A. Graham's Kelantan A State of The Malay Peninsular ( 1908 )
* The town of Tumpat in 1936.
Tumpat was a small but important port town, located close to the mouth of Kelantan
River and the South China Sea - closer to the latter.
During the years of British endeavour in Kelantan, the port served as a stopover for mail
steamers travelling between Bangkok and Singapore and also as a transit port where
iron-manganese ores from Temangan was shipped from.
Realising its strategic, administrative as well as economic properties, the British
decided to stretch the railway line from Gemas, in Negeri Sembilan, all the way up to
Tumpat ( instead of Kota Bharu ! ), into what it is now known as the East Coast Line.
The Tumpat Train Terminal was and still is the ultimate, last stop for the KTMB
service travelling the East Coast.
Today, there are no more mail steamers nor ores from Temangan and the railway
service is no more popular like it used to be. Tumpat at present, is a sleepy town,
seemingly trapped in time along with signs of its glorious past ....
* Iron Mining in Kelantan : Temangan, Machang & Jubakar, Tumpat
* Shophouses of Jalan Temenggong of Kota Bharu, as taken in late 1970s.
Much of the buildings seen here at both sides of the roads were built between the early
( 1920s ) and mid 20th century.
Fortunately, most are still there today. Much like in the above shot.
* Image coutesy of A.Shukor Rahman's : ' I REMEMBER WHEN... Going to Kelantan and stepping back in time ', NST Online, 26 Apr 2009
* Rows of very old, wooden shophouses of Jalan Post Office Lama.
I would surely find them very enticing if only I could find out the exact year or period of
its construction. Judging from the design, style, material and its rustic appearance,
I have a very strong feeling that they might be built in the beginning of 20th century.
If it is so, than this is surely the rarest, perhaps the last specimen of what business
premises might look like in pre-colonial Kelantan.
* A wooden shophouse lot at Pasir Puteh town.
Pasir Puteh is a small town located some 50 km to the south of Kota Bharu, once made
famous by the Tok Janggut's 1915 uprising.
Like the one found at Jalan Post Office Lama in Kota Bharu, the exact year or period of
construction for this one is also unknown but judging from the appearance, material and
style of construction, it is also very likely from the early 20th century. Of course, looks
alone can be deceiving.
One thing for sure, I like the carved panels and the old style wooden windows.
* The corner of a pre-war shophouse in Tumpat.
The exact year or period of construction is unknown but by looking at the architectural
style, material used and not to forget, the above date-stamped 1936 postcard of
Tumpat, I could assure that it must be of pre-war construction.
Interesting enough, though vernacular in general appearance, the motives on the
' sesiku ' is, correct me if I am wrong, undeniably of Chinese origin.
* An old brick shophouse of Jalan Post Office Lama, Kota Bharu.
A Chinese shophouse built, as clearly stated, in 1913, but now purposely left deserted
for the swiftlet to roost i.e. for the booming, lucrative bird nest industry.
Jalan Post Office Lama and also few adjacent streets are some of the last places where
Kelantan pre-war era relics, artefacts and structures could still be found in Kota Bharu,
albeit fewer than before due to many factors primarily to the town's rapid development
( plus, the lack of spirit of heritage conservation ) ....
The rarest are stuffs from the late 19th and early 20th century.
Many had been lost to time and elements, antique cum souvenir-hunter, fire and modern
day development, leaving only those that resisted the test of time and change, especially
structures like this brick shop house. There is a row of them to be exact, now facing the
newly built, modern high rise cum apartment/shops by the Kelantan River - where its
counterparts used to stand ...
Thanks to the bird-nest industry, or else even this one would kiss the ground too ..
( How ironic ... )
A+ kepada Melaka Kota Warisan Dunia!
Oleh Zaini Hassan
Kita syorkan para pentadbir negeri, perancang bandar yang terlalu kerap ke luar negara
untuk melihat negara orang, melakukan lawatan sambil belajar ke Melaka. Contohilah
pengurusan taman dan sampahnya yang dilihat terlalu tersusun. Perancangan
infrastruktur pelancongannya yang begitu sistematik.
Jika Melaka boleh mengapa Kuala Lumpur tidak boleh? Mengapa Sungai Klang
dibiarkan lesu dan kotor sedangkan ia boleh dijadikan laluan river cruise dari KL ke
bandar diraja Klang; sama seperti yang berlaku di Sungai Melaka? Mengapa Padang
Kota Lama di Pulau Pinang terlalu membosankan - dengan gerai mee sotong di tepinya
masih daif sama seperti puluhan tahun lalu? Mengapa Pasar Siti Khatijah di Kota Bharu
yang diberi nama Bandar Raya Islam terlalu kotor dengan tikus-tikus mondok yang
menjijikkan?
FILLER ENTRY :
Darghi Koto Barghu
ke Djakarta ~ Bandoeng
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
darghi Koto Barghu
ke Djakarta ~ Bandoeng .....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Malaysia di Indonesia.
Papan iklan Visit Malaysia ' Malaysia Truly Asia ' ( foto paling atas ) dan bangunan Kedutaan Besar Malaysia yang
tersergam ( foto tengah ) di tengah-tengah ibukota Indonesia, Jakarta.
Manakala di Kota Bandung, yang terletak kira-kira 180 km ke tenggara Jakarta, aku terserempak pula dengan
stesen minyak Petronas ( foto paling bawah ).
Satu manifestasi hubungan baik sesama bangsa serumpun yang pada masa yang sama, juga satu pelaburan
yang aku kira agak berisiko tinggi di negara yang kadang-kala terbakar ( atau sengaja dibakar ) dengan api
sentimen anti-Malaysia ....
Karenah manusia di hadapan Pasar Baru Bandung.
Pasar Baru Bandung, satu destinasi popular khususnya bagi warga Malaysia yang bertandang ke Kota Bandung,
Jawa Barat, Indonesia. Sebuah pusat membeli-belah berasaskan tekstil yang menjadi syurga bagi kaum wanita
tetapi neraka bagi kaum lelaki ....
Kota Bandung berada pada ketinggian yang boleh dikatakan sama aras dengan Lojing Highlands di Kelantan
iaitu sekitar 800 meter dari aras laut ( sekadar perbandingan, Cameron Highlands berada sekitar 1100
meter ) dan terletak di kaki gunung berapi tidur - Gunung Tangkuban Parahu. Merupakan bandar
yang paling nyaman di Indonesia disebabkan faktor geografi tersebut. Menurut Pakcik Wikipedia, populasi
Bandung kini adalah sekitar 2 juta orang. Lebih kurang populasi Kuala Lumpur juga agaknya ..
Apa yang menarik, sepanjang aku di sana, aku rasa seperti di Kuala Lumpur dan lebih menghairankan
berada di Kuala Lumpur pula terasa seperti berada di Bandung ! Hahahaha ~
( Hanya mereka yang bisa mengungkap yang tersirat sahaja yang bisa faham ! )
Karenah ' pedagang ' atau penjaja yang begitu agresif dan ' provokatif ' ...
... tetapi pada masa yang sama, juga kreatif dan inovatif !
Mereka akan melakukan apa sahaja untuk mendapatkan perhatian dan wang anda.
Dari menjaja beg kain ( bagi mengisi barang yang kita baru sahaja borong ) kepada jurukamera yang
mengambil gambar anda tanpa dipinta ( kalau gambar lawa takper ler gak ! ) ~
Agaknya tidak keterlaluan jika saya nyatakan, hanya mati sahaja yang bisa memisahkan anda dengan
mereka ! Either you or them ! Golongan ini selalu menyasarkan golongan pelancong dan pelancong Malaysia
bagi mereka umpama uncang wang yang padanya berjuntai sepasang kaki dan tangan.
Di China, mungkin kerana masalah komunikasi, mereka tidak begitu agresif dan tak pandai meratap merayu.
Di Jepun pula langsung tiada amalan sebegini ( orang Jepun terlalu hormat 'privacy' ).
Di Malaysia ? Emmm ... tak nampak lagi setakat ni ....
Kalau tidak kerana kemahiran luar biasa aku dalam amalan Tai Chi ( hikmat aura tempis cermin kayangan
peringkat ke-8 ), sudah pasti mereka langsung menerobos kocek aku dengan mudah.
( Namun, dalam satu dua keadaan ... aku tertewas juga .... Emm .. mereka ni ada pakai ilmu ape-ape ker ? )
Nombor pendaftaran kenderaan di Bandung bermula dengan kod huruf " D ".
Sama seperti Kelantan ! Juga bermula dengan huruf ' D ' !
Kalau tidak kerana gaya susunan yang berbeza, pastinya rasa sama sahaja seperti di Kota Bharu ...
Kalau di Malaysia, boleh jadi Toyota Avanza ( model yang bersepah-sepah di Jakarta ~ Bandung ) di atas akan
bernombor plet DBX 1818 dan setakat entri ini dibuat, nombor pendaftaran kenderaan di Kelantan sudah pun
mencecah DBL XXXX dengan trend peningkatan yang deras ...
( Aku impikan plet kereta DDD 888 ! )
Karenah ayam di Bandung yang menduga keyakinan ...
Kelihatan tergantung di sebuah gerai di pasar tapi tiada pula kesan sembelih !
Aku tak pasti adakah ianya gerai orang bukan Muslim atau sebaliknya !
Yang ajaibnya, setakat yang aku terlihat, rata-rata sedemikian ~
Aku sendiri pun hairan, mengapa sering saja tercetus rasa yang agak kurang senang untuk 'eating out' semasa
di sana. Benar, faktor kebersihan adalah salah satu isu yang kerap terlintas tetapi itu bukanlah sesuatu yang
merunsingkan sangat kerana di Malaysia pun apa kurangnya ...
Agaknya yang jelas paling menduga hati, perasaan dan iman adalah setakat mana status Halalan Toyyiba
ditegakkan di Indonesia. Memikirkan apa yang aku telah lihat, aku secara peribadi berasa cukup ironik
kerana sepatutnya isu sedemikian tidak timbul kerana Indonesia sering digembar-gemburkan sebagai
negara paling ramai umat Islam di dunia. Entahlah .. cukup sukar nak padamkan bisikan hati ini ...
Apa-apa pun, yang pasti, selama aku di sana, hanya Restoran Padang ( Minang ) sahaja yang paling meyakinkan ...
( sekadar pandangan peribadi aku semata ~ )
Di Indonesia, ikan ini memang cukup popular !
Jika anda dihidang dengan ikan yang sekali imbas seperti ikan bawal, dua kali imbas seperti ikan Tilapia, tiga
kali imbas macam tak tergamak nak makan, jangan segan untuk bertanya. Jawapan yang mungkin diterima
adalah ' Ikan Gurame ' !
Bukan ikan yang aneh bagi orang Malaysia. Bukan ikan yang tiada di Malaysia.
Di Malaysia, ikan ini dikenali ramai dengan nama Ikan Kaloi atau dalam lidah saintifiknya, Osphronemus goramy
atau Giant Gourami dan biasa ditemukan di kedai-kedai akuarium sebagai ikan hiasan akuarium ( harganya
tidak murah dan oleh sebab itu, amat jarang berakhir di atas meja makan ).
Mengulas tentang hidangan Ikan Kaloi ini, dengan ikhlas aku katakan bahawa aku ini bukanlah peminat ' ikae
darghak ' ( keli, puyu, haruan etc .. juga termasuk Kaloi ! ) walaupun aku penggemar ' ikae sungaa ' ( kelah,
patin, tenggalan, jelawat dan seumpamanya ). Hampir-hampir sahaja aku tolak ikan ini ke tepi atas dasar
selera peribadi tetapi darurat punya pasal, tambah pula perut tengah Keroncong untuk Ana, aku rembat saja ~ !
( Tapi ... Boleh tahan jugak rasa Ikan Kaloi nih ! )
Antara peminta sedekah yang cukup ramai beraksi di Kota Bandung.
Modus operandi yang cukup konvensional dan popular, merayu kasih ( dinilai dengan wang ) sambil mendukung anak kecil.
Mahu saja aku sarankan mereka agar menghantar anak-anak itu ke sekolah atau tidurkan sahaja di rumah
( mereka perlukan cukup tidur ! ) dan sebaliknya, jika mereka masih ingin mengemis sedemikian, buatlah
sambil mendukung ayam, anak kambing atau biawak hidup sebagai ganti ... sesungguhnya itu lebih afdhal !
Hairan sekali kerana apa yang aku lihat, majoriti peminta sedekah atau pengemis ini adalah masih muda
remaja, terlalu muda dan tidak sedikit kanak-kanak. Aku kagum juga dengan anak-anak kecil, khususnya
kanak-kanak perempuan yang menjadi penghibur jalanan, merayau-rayau hingga lewat malam sambil
memetik gitar dan memalu gendang serta berlagu dengan suara mengalahkan Rossa dan Bunga Cinta Lestari.
Aku yakin pendapatan mereka sebulan dengan aktiviti begini pastinya jauh lagi banyak dari gaji aku sebulan !
Barangkali dengan perolehan sehari pun sudah menjangkau lebih gaji aku sebulan !?
( Kempen Facebook Warga Indonesia ' Hentikan bayi (anak kecil) dibawa buat ngamen/ngemis! ' )
Rumah-rumah di pinggiran jalan menuju ke Tangkuban Parahu, Bandung.
Sepanjang berkenderaan antara Jakarta dan Bandung, mata ini tak lekang dari memandang dan meneliti setiap
atap rumah penduduk-penduduk sekitar.
Apa yang aku perasan, dari semegah-megah rumah di bandar sehinggalah kepada seringkas-ringkas rumah di
desa, majoriti mengenakan pada atap kediaman masing-masing, sejenis genting buatan tempatan yang aku
anggap menarik dan tersendiri. Berlainan dengan Malaysia yang sama banyak penggunaan genting dan
' atap zink '. Malang sekali, masa dan peluang yang ada tidak mengizinkan aku untuk merakamkan genting
berkenaan dengan lebih dekat ...
Mujurlah Pakcik Internet ada membantu :
' Kebumen's Soka roof-tile home industry continues to flourish ' - Agus Maryono, The Jakarta Post : 5 Sep 2008
' Jati Wangi, Pusat Penghasil Genteng Majalengka ' - Ahmad Prabudi, Berita Cerbon : 31 Jan 2009
Sebenarnya aku ada menyimpan ' affection ' atau minat ( jangan pula dikelirukan dengan ' fetish ' ! ) terhadap
genting rumah. Khususnya yang menarik, yang berunsurkan tradisi, yang mencerminkan identiti dan keunikan
sesuatu lokaliti. Dalam entri-entri terdahulu, saya banyak menulis tentang Bata Singhorra sebagai material atap
di Kelantan dan banyak juga mengulas berkaitannya, betapa ianya telah memberikan satu identiti yang unik
khususnya kepada alam senibina Negeri Kelantan.
Malang sekali, industri pembuatan dan penggunaan Bata Singhorra yang dahulunya begitu meluas di Kelantan
kini sudah hampir lenyap. Rumah-rumah baru tidak lagi menggunakan genting jenis tersebut dan industri yang
dahulunya tidak terkira kini hanya tinggal satu di Bachok. Banyak rumah lama khususnya rumah-rumah
kayu yang selama ini megah menggayakan Bata Singhorra telah roboh menyembah bumi atau bertukar angin
kepada atap zink. Walaupun jelas ianya mempamerkan identiti setempat, masa depan Bata Singhorra di
Kelantan nampaknya tiada kepastian ....
Kota Bandung dari udara.
Penggunaan genting buatan tempatan yang meluas mewarnai bumi Bandung dengan kemilauan warna merah
'terracotta'. Foto dirakamkan dari pesawat yang menuju pulang ke Malaysia, beberapa minit sejurus berlepas
dari Bandara Husein Sastranegara, Bandung.
Rakyat Indonesia nampaknya gemar memendekkan perkataan-perkataan yang mereka tuturkan seharian.
Di sini perkataan Bandara merujuk kepada ' Bandar Udara ' atau ' Lapangan Terbang ' dalam Bahasa Malaysia.
Ada bertimbun-timbun lagi contoh kependekan yang aku mampu berikan, sesetengahnya lucu juga
bila disebut dan didengar, tetapi tak apalah, kerana rasanya semua orang dah tau ...
Bandara Husein Sastranegara yang tampak usang, kecil dan ' kompak ' mengingatkan aku akan rupa Lapangan
Terbang Sultan Ismail Petra ( LTSIP ), Kota Bharu sehingga 10 tahun dahulu dan bercakap tentang LTSIP,
baru-baru ini akhbar The Star Online melaporkan bahawa RM 50 juta telah diperuntukkan bagi kerja-kerja
menaik taraf lapangan terbang tersebut dari lapangan terbang domestik kepada yang mampu menguruskan
penerbangan antarabangsa. Sebagaimana dipetik :
| Quote: |
KOTA BARU: A RM50mil fund has been allocated to extend the Sultan Ismail Petra
airport runway at Pengkalan Chepa to accommodate bigger and more aircraft, said
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.
He said ministry studies showed that the airport was the busiest in the east coast and
recorded the highest number of passengers.
' RM50mil to extend airport runway ' - The Star Online, Sat. June 13, 2009.
Jika ianya benar-benar menjadi kenyataan, aku hanya mampu tersengih sinis ...
Distinctively KeLaTte : A Tribute to Lado Solok ...
Distinctively KeLaTte :
A Tribute to Lado Solok ...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The latest in ' Distinctively KeLaTte ' series.
( .. and the last one was like more than a year ago ! )
When speaking of things unique to Kelantan, almost everything I posted here at this
site, is or at least supposed to be ' distinctively ' Kelantanese - in a way or another.
However, certain things are still more ' distinctive ' than the others .....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here it is .... Lado Solok !
Dedicating the current entry to this one amazing ' hot babe '
( ... yang telah banyak berjasa kepada bangsa Kelantan ! Hehe ~ )
Well .. it might look like any normal green ' cili ' or ' lada ' or ' cabai ' to most non-market-going Malaysians out there but this particular type of chilli pepper is special and you won't find them anywhere else in Malaysia *, not even in the supposedly " semua ada " Kuala Lumpur !
A cultivar of Capsicum annuum unique to Kelantan and known locally as 'Lado Solok', for a reason to be explained later. The texture is crunchier than any other chilli normally found in the market, the crunchiness that somewhat comparable to that of bell pepper.
* There is however, to some extent, said to be found also in neighbouring Terengganu, probably introduced by the Kelantanese ~ The chilli itself is said to be brought into Malaysia ( Kelantan ) first, from neighbouring Southern Thailand ...
.... or is it the other way around ?
The reason to its name is simply for its well known and important role in ' Solok Lado ' - a simple but popular Kelantanese dish made from a combination of finely chopped fish meat and grated coconut flesh with some other ingredients, stuffed into the chilli ( only this kind, not just any kind! ) and cooked in coconut milk. Now, notice the 'word play' ? Lado Solok and Solok Lado ? Thus explaining how Lado Solok got its name ....
Speaking of Solok Lado, the dish could be easily found through out Kelantan, often as a side dish ( emmm ... a must to be exact ), to the more well known Nasi Kerabu and usually being sold at eateries and make-shift stalls by the roadsides. While Nasi Kerabu seems to be faring quite well outside its native Kelantan, in many places across Malaysia, its loyal companion - ' Solok Lado ' still struggles with an odd mate. Outside Kelantan, to compensate the absence of Lado Solok, the Kulai variety of green chilli is often used instead as a substitute, resulting a very poor Solok Lado ( in my personal opinion ) in both quality and appearance.
Besides Solok Lado, Lado Solok also regularly find its way into local dishes such as Ikae Singgae and Kelantanese fish / meat curry, often alongside ' kachae miyyor ' and ' terghoung ' or ' timung batae '... and as for me, I personally find sliced Lado Solok, together with slices of onion and lime wedges, to be a very toothsome combination that goes excellently well with my budu and kicap.
Kudos to Lado Solok !
A true Kelantanese pride !
Hahahaha ~
* Lada Solok is sold and could be found in abundance in the markets throughout Kelantan.
( Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah, Kota Bharu, Kelantan )
* A local Kelantanese farmer and his proud patch of Lada Solok.
( Kampung Banggol, Kota Bharu, Kelantan )
* Solok Lado in " actions "....
The image at the top is what true and authentic Solok Lado should look like.
Stuffed in Lado Solok that blended together very well with the filling when cooked.
While the two images beneath it, are some examples of ' improvised ' Solok Lado
using ' non-standard ' Lado Solok ( tak tergamak la plak aku nak kata ' sub-standard ! He he ~ )
as taken from the internet ( click image for the real source ).
Those are often found outside Kelantan, due to the absence of Lado Solok.
Trust me ... Solok Lado is Solok Lado only if it is made from Lado Solok !
* What I meant with " goes excellently well with my budu and kicap ".
Slices of Lado Solok in budu ( fish sauce, left ) and kicap ( soy sauce, right ).
* Oh ! Did I tell you that ....
... Lado Solok also makes excellent, crunchy lado jerghouk ( pickled chilli ) ?
FILLER ENTRY : Surprise, surprise, surprise !
.
FILLER ENTRY :
Surprise, surprise, surprise !
( Tajuk dipinjam dari entri terdahulu ! )
SURPRISE NO. 1
Bagus juga sesekali bertandang ke luar ....
Kata orang ( saya lah 'orang' itu ! ), seandainya kita mahu merasai dengan jelas magnitud sebenar 'perubahan' yang berlaku di tempat sendiri, adalah perlu untuk kita pergi ke luar, ke daerah lain, yang seboleh-bolehnya jauh dan tiada khabar yang mampu sampai, seterusnya diam di situ beberapa ketika sebelum kembali semula ...
Setidak-tidaknya, itulah yang saya lakukan !
Saya pulang ke Kelantan dalam keadaan agak terkesima, terlopong, terpaku sejenak setelah menyaksikan tidak sedikit benda lama yang telah bertukar baru ( dan tak kurang juga, yang baru bertukar lama ! ) terutamanya yang ada di sekitar bandar Kota Bharu ...
Antara yang paling ' menarik perhatian ' adalah yang berikut :
1 ~ ' Face lift ' Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah ....
2 ~ Lebih separuh Balai Polis Daerah Kota Bharu telah diratakan bagi satu projek komersil ...
3 ~ Bazaar Tengku Anis mula menampakkan rupa di atas tapak Istana Tengku Seri Akar ...
4 ~ Bangunan Kota Bharu Trade Center ( KBTC ) juga semakin menampakkan rupa ...
5 ~ Skrin LED Gergasi, pertama seumpamanya di Kelantan, telah muncul di Kota Bharu .....
6 ~ Kerja pembinaan Jambatan ke-2 Sultan Yahya Petra sudah mula nampak ...
7 ~ Lanskap Bulatan Jam Besar Kota Bharu berubah terus dari yang sebelumnya .....
8 ~ Banyak bangunan-bangunan kedai baru di sana sini ....
9 ~ Kelantan Trade Center ( KTC ) seolah hanya menanti dua ' kubah ' ikoniknya tiba ...
10 ~ Jalan Tok Hakim akan dibuka semula dan aliran-aliran trafik di Kota Bharu akan diubah ....
... dan serghbou maknekou lagih .. ( mallah eh ambo nok ghoyak belako ! )
Yang berikut mungkin boleh membantu memberikan sedikit gambaran
( sila klik setiap foto untuk mendapatkan ' feel ' yang berbeza ! ) :
SURPRISE NO. 2
' Surprise ' yang ke-2 adalah berkaitan keadaan laluan pejalan kaki ( kaki lima ? ) di luar Masjid Muhammadi di Kota Bharu :
Saya begitu kagum dengan idea yang diterjemah dan digarapkan sedemikian rupa.
Bentuk ' covered walkway ' yang begitu ' ngam ' dengan ' essence ' senibina bangunan masjid itu sendiri. The arches and the colour scheme really fit the building itself ! Sekali lihat seolah-olah ianya adalah sebahagian daripada bangunan masjid itu sendiri ! Ya, sebelum ini pun sudah ada ' covered walkway ' tetapi ianya biasa sahaja, dan tidak se ' artistik ' sekarang ini !
Saya berkereta, sambil mulut tak henti-henti memuji sehinggalah saya melepasi di hadapan bangunan lama dan bersejarah milik Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Istiadat Melayu Kelantan ( MAIK ) ini :
* klik foto untuk gambaran dari sudut berbeza.
Errr ... Maaf ...
Saya budak baru belajar, juga tidak begitu mahir dalam menilai keindahan dan kecantikan .. tetapi jauh dalam hati saya tertanya-tanya, adakah perlu untuk melanjutkan ' covered walkway ' itu sehingga ke hadapan bangunan tersebut, yang jelas memiliki ' essence ' yang berbeza.
Emmm ... macam ' tak masyuk ' laa pulak ... he he he
( Mudah kata, umpama memadankan baju hijau dengan seluar merah ! )
Entah la .......
SURPRISE NO. 3
Apa-apa pun, ' surprise ' ke-3 dan yang paling mengujakan,
adalah tak lain tak bukan adalah yang melibatkan, MASJID LAMA MULONG !
Perihal masjid itu pernah disentuh dalam satu entri yang lepas.
Bahkan, saya pernah dipelawa oleh seorang kenalan untuk meninjau masjid tersebut pada awal kerja konservasi. Walaupun saya tak pasti jenis keterlibatan beliau dalam projek konservasi Masjid Lama Mulong, dia memang pakar dalam bidang sedemikian. Malang sekali saya terpaksa menolak pelawaan itu kerana tika itu juga saya terpaksa meninggalkan Kelantan kerana ' panggilan tugas '. Betapa saya rindu untuk melihatnya, Masjid Lama Mulong ini merupakan bangunan pertama yang saya nanti-nantikan kelibatnya tatkala berkereta masuk ke Jajahan Kota Bharu semasa pulang dari ' perantauan ' baru-baru ini ...
Yang pasti, setinggi-tinggi tahniah dan penghargaan kepada mereka yang telah mengambil inisiatif sebegini. Saya kagum bercampur terharu .... sedih dan sayu pun ada bila mana terkenangkan satu kisah yang sama tapi berbeza.
Inilah yang sebenarnya saya impikan !
Bak kata orang kampung saya, ' on site conservation ' !
Yakni, konservasi atau pemulihan khazanah negara diusahakan di tapak asal, tidak terus diangkut keluar entah ke mana atau seumpamanya ....
Paling menarik, lokasi masjid ini hanya sepelaung dari Masjid Lama Kampung Laut !
IT'S A COMEBACK !
* Sigh * ....
I have fallen out of my routine for six straight months ....
Away in an " internment camp " in a land far far away from my beloved Kelantan, without proper connection with the outside world, living on overly hectic, pact schedule, almost no access to cyberspace ....
(... and oh yeah, on non-Kelantanese diet too .... he he ..)
But now ... I am BACK !
Alas, finally freed by my " captors ", well ... from the absolutely amazing, 6 months of great experiences and wonderful moments ( that I am totally thankful and won't forget ! ) ..
It's mid May 2009 now and there were a lot of interesting things and notable events had gone by since the past 6 months. Looking back, the last three months of 2008 were really eventful and there were much to write about, but realizing my limitations then, I just had to let them pass by ...
( Believe me, you don't want to know where or how I observed last year's Hari Raya Korban ! )
* By Nokia 6300 - 2 Megapixel
... and oh yes, interestingly Hari Raya Korban / Aidil Adha that year fell on the 8th of December 2008, which was also the the start of World War II in Malaya with the Japanese amphibious landing at Pantai Kuala Pak Amat in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
I was thinking of making an entry to commemorate the event, like I did every year but being in internet wasteland, there was no way I could.
But I decided to commemorate in my own way ( well, sort of ) ....... alongside with my newly found comrades :
* By Nokia 6300 - 2 Megapixel
But perhaps, nothing compares to 17th December 2009.
The day I started photo blogging, more than five years ago, in 2003 .....
Wow ! Five years and I am still at it.
Amazing ! It is somewhat remarkable that I had made it this far ..... a personal feat, I should say. While my friends who took up Fotopages at the same time I took up mine ( including one who inspired me to do so ), had long abandoned theirs, I am still here, putting almost every thoughts I have, especially on Kelantan, in photos and words ... I have no idea how long this will last or until when, perhaps, as long as I am " permitted " to be here and as long as I am feeling like doing it ..... ?
Moving on, it seems that there are a lot things happened in December 2008, apart from the above mentioned, the Islamic New Year of 1430 also fell in December 2008. To be exact, 1 Muharram 1430 was on 29 December 2008 ... Interestingly, just 3 days before the Tahun Baru Masihi itself ...
So, I hope it's still not too late for me to wish my fellow visitors,
" Selamat Tahun Baru Hijrah 1430 and Selamat Tahun Baru 2009 ! "
.. followed by this long list of " Selamat "s :
~ Selamat Tahun Baru Cina ! .... yang tak pasti ke berapa ribu ...
~ Selamat Orang Palestin di Gaza ! Semoga beroleh kemenangan !
~ Selamat .. errr ... better put it in the least understandable lingo :
自分に 「 スラマッ ハリー ラヒール 」!三月二十日、お誕生日をおめでとう~ !
~ Selamat Ulang Tahun Kelahiran Junjungan Besar Kita, Nabi Muhammad S.A.W
( pada 12 Rabi'ul Awal 1430 H bersamaan 9 Mac 2009 ...... )
صلى الله على محمد ... صلى الله عليه وسلم .... يا نبي سلام عليك
يا رسول سلام عليك ..... يا حبيب سلام عليك ... يا رسول الله ... صلوات الله عليك
~ Selamat Hari Keputeraan Al-Sultan Kelantan ke-59 aka Puja Umur, 30 ~ 31 Mac 2009 ...
( Semoga Allah menyihatkan kembali Baginda Tuanku yang kini sedang gering .. )
~ Selamat Hari Pekerja 1 Mei = Labour Day 2009 !
( karena diriku dan kalian adalah karyawan ! )
.. and last, but not least ....
SELAMAT BERKAMERA BARU !
Yahoooooooooooooooooooooooooo ~ ! ( or is it ? )
* By Fujifilm F420 - 3.1 Megapixel. Ironically, this is the last shot with it ...
* When I bought this camera, the first thing that came to my mind, was a DSLR
( to replace my antique, now broken film-based SLR, the Pentax MZ30 35-80mm )
that has to be very very portable ( if possible, exactly like my Fujifilm F420 ).
I was looking for something powerful, of great performance but must not be bulky
or big, that I could bring along anywhere with ease, to take a shot with speed ( like a
pistol and not an anti tank bazooka or a shoulder fired anti aircraft missile ) i.e.
somewhat pocket-able ( which I know won't be possible for a DSLR at the moment ) !
To tell the truth, I have this " addiction " for light sensitivity as excellent light sensitivity
normally spells excellent shots. Nothing I tried so far beats the light sensitivity of a
Fujifilm's ( I tried Nikon D80, but Fujifilm's appeared to be much better, more lively and
vigorous. My decent Fujifilm F420 made a good comparison. ). However, since Fujifilm
fared rather poorly in the DSLR field and that Nikon seems to perform better, I decided
to place my bet on the D60 - as my first DSLR.
But now, this site is telling me that it is much much better to spend your
hard earned cash on a D40 if you are trapped between D40, D40x, D60 and D80, as
the D40 has the lowest mega pixels among them which means larger sensor ( you have
to read the review first to understand this ), thus better light sensitivity i.e. better photo
quality. Upon realising that, I started to feel guilty about having this one .... emmmmm ...
So, anyone fancy a spanking new D60 + camera bag + 4 gig memory card ?
He he he ...
